Discussion in 'Buy/Sell/Trade' started by Whitney, Jul 17, 2013.

  1. Looking to buy a drum or something to hold at least 55 gallons. Anyone selling or have ideas how to get them (besides new) without spending a lot?

Also canyou drink the "bad" water? I feel bad wasting it lol

I was at sportsmans warehouse in ankeny and they had water barrels of different sizes. I can't remember if they had 55, but I picked up a 15g one and they had some larger.

The only thing with waste water is there is a higher level of contaminants per gallon than the water going in.

For example here in Des Moines we are having issues with nitrates. The level of nitrates would be increased per gallon to a level that might be too high.

  6. How do you reuse it for laundry? I'm thinking I might know half the answer to this lol, and our washer and dryer are upstairs, and water will be in the garage.

If you would like, and I can fit it in my car, I can get you a 55 gallon drum for free. It would have to be rinsed out well, they at one time had liquid machining coolant in them.

I know people who actually have a container above their washer and have the line from their RO fill it directly. Then they can just open a valve and put the water in.

I would not recommend using anything on our tanks other than food grade barrels, that have only been used to hold food product.. Using one that once held machining coolant is just asking for problems no matter how much you think you cleaned it out.

Used food grade barrels are out there and can be picked up for cheap usually. xroads mentioned a source, I'm sure other people can source them as well.

I actually couldn't agree more that the drums are probably a bad idea. The coolant is water based and has a pink color to it making it very easy to tell if any amount of it is in water. Like I said, it is probably a bad idea that would require a lot of precautions, I was just trying to offer a free alternative.

It is often thought that HDPE 2 containers (food grade) were always a good choice. However if a food safe plastic container has ever contained anything other than food related items. It is no longer deemed safe by the FDA.
It is a tough choice, the reason HPDE 2 is used in food related storage is because it does not leech, in or out. A very good clean has worked well for countless other on other forums but never follow up with long run results.

Here is a lot of info on the subject

I would use a bleach bath if there is an odor. If not, I would use/rinse with vinegar. If you use bleach, rinse well and add a little Prime or, ensure it is completely dry :0)

Mmm Donuts! Mine was used to hold vanilla and I had a hard time getting the stains to clean up. A little bleach cleaned it right up! just make sure you rince it very well afterward. After you rinse it, let it sit and completely dry out for a day or two before using.
