Been reading some reviews on this pump. Seems one is plenty big for a 180. A newer smaller version is set to come out soon.

Haven't read any negatives other then you can't control the power.

Why cant't you control power? Thought that was what the controller was for? I have a 5 foot so is the 40 too much?

I believe most pumps don't have a controllable range of flow, its all or nothing and that is what makes the tunze and vortechs unique and expensive. I've been using sicce voyager 4s on my tank. They are controlled by an Aquacontroller Jr. But the aquacontroller just turns them on and off, there really is no ramp up. I'm thinking that is what those wp-40s would be like.

It's unfair to expect the same type of performance from a pump that costs about 20% of the highest end pump on the market, for the money they are very comparable in price to the Sicce pumps I purchased, and provide almost double the flow.

That thread said its very similar to the Tunze 6105. The cord is on the inside.
It's not a Vortech, the only similarity is they tried to emulate the timer patterns and Gph, provided by the Vortech. I believe ecotech holds a patent on the external cord. Upon further reading of that thread the Vortech and the Tunze have a much wider flow pattern, where the Chinese one is more focused and forceful. People have successfully modded this pump with different power supplies to give an adjustable current. Seems kind of like a hassle if that is what you are after.
For 85 bucks though it looks nice,

It has a preset high low. With the controller only adjusting the frequency of the off and ons to create different waves

I have the exact tank and I rock 2-mp40's----one on each side and its all you need. I do not think that 2-10mp's would be enough flow but also depends on what you plan on keeping. Just my opinion.

How thick is the tank? MP10's don't work very well on 1/2" thick tanks.

Have you looked at the calculator that Ecotech has on their website? They give all the guidance including thickness of glass limitations.
