WTB 1/4" glass for sump baffles

    Hey,


    Does anyone have any spare glass they'd sell me? I've called all around town and the lowest price I could find was around $48 for cutting 4 pieces. I figured I'd check here to see if anyone had a broken tank/spare glass lying around that I might use for this project. It would be great if the glass was 1/4" (or close) and at least 14" x 12".

    Holy &#!% $48! That place should be investigated for fraud!
    I get 4 pieces of 3/16" cut and the edges sanded down for $12 at a glass shop up here.

    You could try acrylic baffles

    Acrylic wont bond to glass very well

    I've read/heard acrylic bonded to glass will eventually fail, plus a thick enough sheet probably costs more than that anyway. And $48 was seriously the cheapest - I got quoted at anywhere from $17 - $22 per piece for 1/4". I had no idea it was that expensive.


    Also, Brian, the clowns are looking good, thanks again. Did the large one always swim oddly though? I'm hoping it's not a problem with her swim bladder, but she sinks really quickly and seems to have to put a decent amount of effort into swimming. She's not distressed or breathing hard or anything, and she's eating just fine, but she doesn't swim like the male does.

    Call up a window company and see if they have any scrap they would part with.

    I think glass pricing is usually by the entire sheet. If it takes a 2'x2' sheet of glass to get you your 12"x14" piece they are going to charge you for the entire 2x2 sheet then some money for the actual cuts. If they have a piece laying around that's 12" already and they just have to make one cut, then they might give it to you for cheap.

    I will. That's my next step. I'm going to see if I can maybe call one of the university machine shops I did work in before and see if they'll help me out.





    Dunno if you saw my last comment but the clown is swimming like this one:


    It doesn't look like anything is seriously wrong, but I was just wondering if you noticed her doing that in your tank too.

    Sounds good, I'll ask if they'll cut from scrap then.

    Acrylic will work just fine. You don't need a water tight seal on just a baffel. Use it and aquarium safe silicon. I have done it many many time and have it ony 40gal sump now. Do a search on youtube for help. I use two CD cases for spacing between the bubble traps baffels an tape about a 1/2 in parrellel strip of tspe on each edge that you you run a bead of silicon on to have a clean edge. Need help pm me OK.

    What size tank you using. I think I have some already cut for a 40 breeder

    I'm with kyle acrylic should work just fine. The acrylic or glass is not bonding to the tank its the silicone that is doing the bonding to hold the pieces in place. Ive seen premade kits on ebay for just about any given tank size for pretty cheap, just food for thought.

    It's a 20 gallon tall, and I'll keep looking. If the glass is not gonna work, I'll go with the acrylic

    I use acrylic baffles in both my sumps. I use aquarium silicone from BRS and have had no problems. The acrylic is easier to work with and basically doesn't add much wieght to the sump.
