    Thinking about upgrading my tank.
I just thought I would get some opinions before I upgrade my tank. My tank is 125 gallons with a mix of fish and coral. I am thinking about upgrading some of the components in the tank to help the flow and lighting within the tank. The first thing I was thinking about was upgrading the power heads to either 2 Tunze 6105’s or the Ecotech MP40. I was also thinking about upgrading my lights to the 72in 6 unit set of SOL super blues AI lights. With all the upgrading to the tank comes my next question…I know I can buy individual controllers for the Tunze (Multicontroller 7095)pumps and also the AI lights (their own controller) but I think it might be easier to upgrade to a whole tank controller. I do not have any experience with aquarium controllers. I was looking at either the Neptune Apex or the Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper. I believe that both of the controllers that I picked can run the Tunze’s along with the AI lights. Does anyone have any experience on programming the 2 different controllers with the AI lights and the Tunze’s? How hard is it to program the Apex to run these? Do I need an advanced degree in computer programming or can the average human being figure it out? If I went with the Apex, I am a little confused as to whether I need (or want) the Aquasurf program. Do I need it to run the Tunzes? Will it make things easier? Does anyone have any input for me about the upgrades that I am thinking about making to my tank? I know that all the upgrades are going to cost a pretty penny so I would like to have components that all work well with each other and are easy to run and program.

It won't be EASIER to use a controller. I find the controller that comes with the AI lights to be excellent, and very easy to use. The Tunze controllers are also simple and effective. Since I got rid of my MH lighting, I really don't have much need for my controller; I just use it to monitor temp and ph and to control my heater.

Controllers are great if you want a unified solution that allows you to monitor and control things remotely.
I can't tell you anything about the Reef Keeper, but I can tell you that once you get the hang of it, programming the Apex is pretty easy.
The Apex has 2 variable speed ports built in that can control 2 devices each (4 total). These ports can be used to control pumps (like the Tunzes) or dimmable ballasts for T5's or DIY LED's. So... No, you wouldn't need an AquaSurf.
To control AI lights with the Apex, you will need the VDM module (which I believe is $99 bucks). It adds the capability to do all of the AI specific options (like weather effects) and gives you 2 more variable speed ports in addition to the AI port.
    Hope that helps.

The reefkeeper is pretty easy as well. Currently, there is no option to control vortechs with the reefkeepers though, so that's a bit of a bummer. Granted, I am not sure you would really have a need to control the vortechs remotely. All they sell in that size is the wireless version, so it would be a "set and forget" type of thing. I am not familiar enough with the tunze to comment.

The AI control module for the Apex is buggy. Just ask Chad (Reefified). He tried to set it up and never got it to work quite right even with Neptune's techs on the phones and remotely configuring it. They will get it fixed (and may have already with their latest firmware release, I don't know...) but last I heard, it had some issues. He's using the AI controller and is very happy with it. Personally, a unified solution is very attractive to me, but you gotta go with what works for you. And I'm an Apex fan, probably to a fault. I was about to pull the trigger on a RK controller when they had a 10% off conference sale, but when I called in to order it, they did not let me have the discount (despite the fact that they offered it to me on a previous call) and that turned me off. I ended up buying a used AC3 and have been a Neptune Systems fan ever since. I've heard the RK units are good from some and bad from others...but I've heard the same about all other controllers. The AC3 and Apex are not perfect controllers, but I love mine and wouldn't have a reef tank without a controller. Either way, if you have programming questions, you can ask them here and probably get an answer. More likely with the Apex than the RK as I think more of our members are Apex owners, but I'm betting if you bought an RK and had a question, someone would step forward to help with your questions.

As for powerheads, Tunze powerheads are tried and true. been on the market a long time, they are solid, and easy to work with. MP40s are great too. They have some benefits over the Tunze powerheads like not adding as much heat to the tank. Both are controllable, and both carry a price tag substantially more than a standard powerhead. The Apex has built in support for controlling Tunze pumps (generic, variable speed ports), but you have to buy the WXM module for the Apex if you want to integrate them into your controller. Keep in mind, that's optional as each Ecotech pump comes with a full featured controller/driver. The Ecotech pumps are a little more particular as they have to be lined up just right. They can also be noisy as they don't have the water to muffle the sound of the motor. All that being said, I love my MP40s.

As for LEDs, both options have pros and cons. You can do DIY LEDs like many members are currently doing for a fraction of the cost, or you can do AI lights. The DIY LEDs can't do all of the same things as the AI units can (i.e. dim below 10%, vendor supported firmware and upgrade path, etc.) and take time to build, but it looks like a fun project and we a couple very talented members that would help you with questions.

Anyway, lots of ways to address each of your upgrade needs. For most of us, cost is a driving factor. The upgrades you're talking about (6 unit AI set, 2 controllable powerheads, aquarium controller, etc.) will run you over $3500. Anyway, determine what your needs are, check out what others in your area have (tank tours), then move forward. Part of the fun in this hobby is everyone does their tank a little different than everyone else. Once you have more specific questions about particular features or requirements, then come back and ask more questions. Good luck!
