As GIRS's Membership Coordinator, I'm looking for your input as to why you haven't become a (paying) GIRS Member.  I'm hopeful that your responses will help us as a club better meet your needs to become a (paying) Member.  Thanks in advance for your input/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The number one reason I have seen, especially lately, is that people don't know where the money is going. "Club sponsored events" is generally the answer, but I find that vague, even as a paying member. Don;t get me wrong, I have no problem paying, but I think that is a valid question that I have seen asked a few times now.

I have a great idea to get alot of new members, thought of this last night at work, At spring frag fest, every person that comes to the door that is not a member liek myself, offer a one time deal sign up today and pay the $20 bucks member fee and get into frag fest for free. In the long run the club will gain more members, more funds, and if people join there more likey to stay members. I do realize you will lose $10 however ur actually making money. ($20).

There are multible reason i have not joined ...yet...
    1. even though im spending more time on the website, Im not convinced about the people here. As i get to know you, ill end up joining, unless someone totally pisses me off. You dont meet someone in feal life and give them money the first day.
    2. WIIFM, everyone says the benifet are far better than the 20 bucks, show me dont tell me.
    3. I am a numbers person, i like to know where the money i give goes, again show me dont tell me.
    4. There is no beginners helpers...Even though alot of you spend alot of time on the forums, and that you are very knowledgable. You intimidate people, new people to SW like myself are scared to ask questions, cuz we dont want to look stupid. I really think a beginers area on webisite would be great idea. Prime example I asked about LED when i first started, everyone told me go buy these blank blank blank. and DIY, But no one answered my question so i just gave up. A starter page might be good just to help people to know what to get and what to do, and we all know what happens once you get hooked. no fish pun intended

Since i want to be positive, reason i would join:
    1. So far the people are nice on teh website, helpful, and point me in the right direction.
    2. I enjoyed the frag fest.
    3. I think i can improve the club

Twenty bucks for a membership to anything is a steal these days. I didn't know about actually joining originally untill it was time to go to the 1 st meeting like the one this week. I signed up paid my dues and learned what they really put into this . There is a lot of time and effort.Like Aj told you the other day it cost a pretty penny to put on a frag fest. I also won free food that night at the meeting that was worth the 20 bucks I spent. I agree there needs to be a section online for people to look at the club finances to see where it goes. As a member I get into a frag fest for a mere 10 dollars and buy corals at prices I would not be able to buy in any lfs. Plus I have met people here who are willing to bend over backwards to help you out. I have never had a post go unanswered and the info is always helpful, even if you don't want to hear it. PLus The biggest Benenfit is that I can talk tanks to people all day and they don't roll their eyes like I sometimes get from my wife . LOL . I think this has been a place where I as a reefer have found a home for my addiction! I think you will like it , go to the meetings and see and ask questions.

Just this forum is worth more than the price of membership. The fact that it can be accessed for nothing is a credit to the founders of the club. It ought to be on the honor system. Try it out, and if you like it, pay your membership. I don't know where the money goes, and frankly, I don't care. This is absolutely the cheapest thing that I do for my tank.

I decided to join the day we walked into AC&C for the first time and actually had people who were able to diagnose what had happened to our tank earlier in the week. It was May and had gotten really hot outside for a day or two and we had metal halides over the tank. Nobody in our area had been able to figure out what caused it to crash. Besides helping with that problem, we were invited to stay for the coral fragging demo that afternoon, sponsored by GIRS and demo'd by members, with great food afterwards. I've always gotten great help with any questions I've asked on the forum, even if sometimes the answers are way over my head and I have to have someone get it into my realm of understanding. The vast majority of the people in this club are willing to help out, will come to your tank if they need to in order to give that help and are very generous with their knowledge, time and frags. What you get for your $20 is all that, discounts from AC&C (don't know of others), discounts from other members and the opportunity to meet and interact with hundreds of people of people who share your passion. Sounds like one hell of a deal to me! 'Nuff said.

I can't think of any reason not to join.

If you own a reef tank, you can afford $20 a year to come to this site and lurk.

Personally, I don't go out of my way to help non-members. I'm just sayin.

I think Sponge is hoping to hear from non-members as to why they haven't become a member, rather than reasons why you should become a member or why you became one yourself (that's another thread in the member's forum).

So back to the OT (original topic), let's hear from some non-members!

That's right Bud ;-0) Non-members voice your opinions now on why you have not joined GIRS. This is the only way that we can help answer any questions you have, complaints addressed, etc... We can't meet needs until we know what they are! Keep talking! ;=0)

Yes Bela, I think that is a question many have...I did when I first visited the site.  Although I can't give specific amounts, I have learned a few things where the money goes.  Although I haven't made it to past business meetings, I hope to for the meeting Saturday in Coralville which may give more answers to this particular question.  Maybe some of the Meeting minutes can be posted for those unable to attend which can provide more Club transperancy/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif  Attendees can also post information, experience they had, etc. as the annual meeting is open to everyone./DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif

Generally speaking, Club money is used for hosting this website...although it is free to registered individuals, it is a club expense.  Funds also go to each region (Interst Groups) which is used for expenses incurred from the monthly meetings and the Christmas party.  I believe a very large expense is incurred for holding the Frag Fests.  The facility charges the club for the usage and guest speakers' are paid also.  Things like raffle tickets and other incidentals (signs/advertising/etc) are incurred by the Club..  I know when I was first learning about the Club, I often wondered what about the Vendor fees and Sponsors' fees-  where does that money go?  Vendors and Sponsors are not charged alot...Sponsors also donate raffle items and other items during the year which are giving to the Regions and/or used as raffle items at the annual Business Meeting.  Because Membership ebbs and flows, the Club's inflows are unpredictable whereas there are some recurring expenses (like the website), the Fest venues).  I know that many Trustees and Board Members have paid for things for their Regions/Club without asking for reimbursement.   These are a few things I have learned along the way and I'm sure there are other things which I have left out.  If I have misstated anything, I'm sure a Board Member will correct me/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif Going to the Business Meeting will further help answer this often asked, "Where does the money go?"

I lurked for a while before registering with the site and then it took me a while longer to become a dues paying member. I am from the western side of IA, where there is less club activity. It's a fairly long distance to travel to make it to events or to visit some of the stores were one could take advantage of member discounts. I hope that in over time, more people in western IA & eastern Nebraska could gather enough interest to form a new region. So why did I become a dues paying member? I saw the value of a membership is more than any $ value. To me, it's the community. Welcoming. Active. Helpful. Informative. Fun.

I'm an officer in another club and I can tell you that putting on even a small event is not cheap. We hold an annual event at the Waterloo Center for the Arts and even with a price break (we hold our monthly meetings there also) it's over $400 just to rent the room. You can burn up $20 a person very quickly.

I believe the BoD has considered in the past your idea of getting new members.  It is not an easy task to sign up members at the Fests.  The 'usual' volunteers are busy helping at the Fests by taking admissions, selling food and various other tasks involved. As has been stated, holding the Fests are expensive.  I may be wrong but the cost of just renting the building we will have for this year's Spring Fest is $900.  I believe that was a "discounted price" because we are a non-profit organization.  As I'm sure you and others know, things are not cheap!  For members who attend SpringFest, this year they will get some free raffle tickets instaed of a discounted price.  I can tell you this but not show it to you unless you become a Member before the Fest occurs/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif  Saturday at the Annual business meeting, financial information will be presented. The meeting is open to everyone, Members and those registered here. This is a good time to hear about the clubs' finances/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif  I know when I first came to GIRS, I had many questions such as where does the membership dues go?, who is on the BoD, why this-why that and so forth. I still ask questions and get the information needed/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif Some people are okay with not knowing where the funds go, others not.   It's not an issue of trying to conceal information about any club matter.  Why give out information about things that Board members manage?  I personally wouldn't want to know where MASNA, Reef Central, Reefers Paradise, etc. spends their money or any other information that their Board Members/Administrators are privy to.  If I wanted most or all the information from them, I'd seek a Board postion.  If I wanted to know generally, I'd attend their business meeting or ask.  Noone is paid or given money as GIRS is All Volunteers!

Your suggestion for a "beginner's" thread is noted.  I don't know what that would take but the webmaster might.  All beginners' tend to be unduly uncomfortable asking questions.  I have not ever seen/heard of anyone here being intimidated.  We all were "newbie's" and had questions. I'm sure we thought we had stupid questions so we either researched the information or asked. To this day, I will ask questions which others may feel are stupid...oh well. Sometimes I even ask the same question many times/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/whistling.gif  It's either a matter of old age/loss of memory or my brain just doesn't understand/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/unsure.gif Everyone I know here is more than happy to help newbies'.  As far as having a question unanswered here, don't give up!  Someone will help even if it's as simple as "I don't know" but you might want to go here___________. What I have noticed, although "very rarely", some people do not want to do their homework;they want to be spoon-fed. Reefkeeping has a learning curve and there is alot of information to learn. With that said, everyone has a unique tank. Some cannot keep chalices, they just won't live...some have large swings with their nitrate and phosphate levels, others do not, etc. Some believe that deep sand beds work, others don't...so everyone has their own opinion on various aspects of reefkeeping. It is a matter of a newbie finding someone(s) whom they trust that gives accurate information and relevant to their tank/situation.  I have seen numerous times on reefsites where inaccurate information was given so it's important to not accept all information until it's verified.  Although our website doesn't have a beginners' section, many websites do.  Those that have been in the hobby for some time, frequent other websites also.  Reef Central and Reefers Paradise are a couple examples with beginners/newbie childboards.  It is impossible for anyone to give out all the information needed by newbies and, some have answered the same questions so many times, they are leaving it to someone else.  Using the search function on the website often will lead to the information one is needing as well.

Hope to see you at the Annual Business Meeting in Coralville on Saturday!/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

i would like to point out that we will allow non mmbers to come to the meeting to help decide if they want to join however non members will not be permitted to enter in the raffle. if you do decide to become a member you will be allowed to pay your membership fee at the meeting and then you can enter the raffle.
