refractometer, you can usually get one for $30-$40. The floating glass ones are fairly accurate too, but they break really easily and are more of a hassle to use. (You have to wait for them to stop bobbing, and if you put it in your display you will probbaly have to turn off all the pumps)

You'll learn this really quickly.  The world of the saltwater hobby in Northern Iowa pretty much relies on the internet for everything!
Here's a few good ones in no particular order:

The closest to me {35 miles}is in clear lake. They are of zero help to me unless I'm looking for bird seed or feeder gold fish. There is one in Mason,I don't know the name. They supposily will speacil order but I cannot hook up with the guy that does the ordering.I have been trying to catch him since June.Left phone # ect..I have never tried to give someone money so hard in my life.Ther is a petco in mason city, but I cannot get myself to go in there.I got that crappy old school thing about me that makes me want to support mom&pops/hobbest.I'm trying to shake it but damm...I guess I'm a dinosaur.

put your cursor on the word REFRACTOMETER and click on it.  It's a link to marine depot's site of the one I used to have.

I just ordered this one on ebay, probably not top of the line but works great. Plus you get a cheesey PH meter too.

I use the pinpoint salinity monitor. I love it and you can leave it in your tank to continuously monitor. Its a little pricey but works great http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4486

I don't think you will be able to find a refractometer locally... if you can, it would cost an arm & a leg.  This is the one I use and only about $30 shipped.  It's good you want to help the local stores, but sounds like yours isn't willing to help you out.  You can support them by purchasing the basics like livestock, frozen food, and aquariums from them.  I would leave lighting and other equipment to the online vendors unless you like paying 100% + markup
