It get's hard because it draws moisture from the air. Put it in some 5g buckets.

I keep mine in one of those hinged-lid stackable containers, and I keep them in my storage/furnace room where it's always cool and dry. I asked the same question somewhere else a while back and someone said they take the bags (from the 200g box of IO or RC) and put those in 5g buckets and seal them so +1 ^.

I store mine in the 5g buckets but still occasionally get clumps of hard salt. The Dollar Tree stores sell giganto zip lock bags for clothes storage that work really well. And guess what....they are only a dollar.

Just buy 200 gallon box, then you only use one 50 gallon bag at a time then just use it all up in a month. The problem is, you need to do more water changes lol

Yeah 5 gallon buckets work well as long as it's away from splashing and moisture and you put a sealed lid on it well every time after you use it. But if you use a measuring cup, you'll likely dip it, or get splashing and end up getting the salt in the bucket wet and end up with the same problem. I don't use a measuring cup at all myself, I just dump most of a bag into my 35 gallon container and guesstimate the amount, lowballing to begin with, then adjusting after a couple of hours. That's why I only get 200 gallon boxes. If 50 gallon bags don't work for you, and you still have the problems with the bucket, I can only suggest buying in smaller volumes, which sucks if you can't find somebody to give you a fair price on it.

I think a drum would work fine. I would leave it in the bags and stack them in the drum.

If the bag is sealed, why is it getting hard? I have had some sit on the back porch for months and it never gets hard.

Sometimes they have little holes in them that let enough moisture in to ruin it. There were a few boxes at Seascapes that Tim thought made it through the flood but when we opened the boxes the salt was clumpy.
