I'm looking for a pump for the new tank at Grove & Platt Dental.  The tank will be a Miracles Custom rimless, 66 L x 21 W x 24 H (roughly 125 gallon actual capacity) with notched end overflow for an external box containing a BeanAnimal 3-pipe system with 1.5" plumbing.  Max flow rating of the overflow will be 3000 GPH.  The return will be a 1.5" into a plenum.  Ideally, it won't need any powerheads.  Maybe a Vortech if I can figure out where to put it, but that's about it.
So basically I need a pump that can produce at least 3000 GPH at about 5' of head (maybe 6' when you figure in the backpressure of the plenum).
I was looking at Reefflo, they seem to fit the bill (1.5" outlet, adjustable flow rate, etc) and BRS has them.  Any other suggestions?

We have been using the new water blaster pumps from Octopus. They seem to be working good.

Lots of people here like the Reeflos. I'd suggest going to someone's house to hear what they sound like. I think you have a room behind that tank, don't you? Might work out just fine.

No separate room, but there will be cabinetry around the entire tank. Are they particularly loud?

Reeflos have been my best experience. Had my Barracuda in the basement for 4 years and cleaned it twice. Barely any noise and have it valved back 50% still pumping 1500gph. Can't go wrong.

Reeflo all the way. I have a hammerhead hybred that is a little loud but if i had rubber under the pump and in the a cabinet it would be alot quieter. I can't say enough good abought their pump's and customer service. When i was looking for a new pump i called reeflo and they were very helpful in helping select the correct pump for what i wanted to do. Imo you can't go wrong with a reeflo.

Reeflo.........it replaced my Iwaki......and I thought the Iwaki was "quiet". Mine sits on two pieces of cork board (all I had) and it is basically silent.

That's the comparison I was looking for. Taki runs 2 Iwaki pumps on MDF and they are quiet with the cabinet closed, and still relatively quiet with it open. Sounds like the Octopus is a good pump too, but I'm leaning Reefflo since I am hearing all good things, and a good track record...

One thing i have found with the blueline pumps which are pretty much the same a iwaki is the fact that if you dont clean them every 4 or 5 month's they tend not to restart after a power outage on their own. Their is a shaft that goes through the impeller. The impeller is supost to spin on that shaft but if it gets to much build up in their they wont restart. It doesn't take much for them to get to much in their to not restart. I think the reeflo is a much better design. Yes they are expensive but you do get what you pay for.

That's interesting. I clean Taki's Iwaki pumps when I tore down the tank and they were not all that dirty. I haven't cleaned them since (bad on me, but they don't want to pay a lot for maintenance) and I've shut them off a few times, but not for a while, but they always started up fine...

I ran an Iwaki for years, and turned it off MANY times and it always restarted with no problem.

I ran an old blueline for years, never cleaned it and it restarted perhaps a hundred times without fail.

That's weird. I have 2 that on a regular basis they would act up. I put one on a qt two weeks ago and sure enough went down this morning and it wasnt pumping. I had to take it apart to get it working. Maybe it's just the two pump's i have. Glad everyone has had better luck with them than me.
