I know a couple people using it in freshwater and love it. Thinking about trying it in my bio cube but
Was wondering if anyone around here has tried it.

Floyd R Turbo is using one on a tank he maintains. Got to see it on the recent tank tour...very nice setup and seems to be working as it was growing "turf"

I use one currently.  It's all I use for filtering besides all the live rock.  Been running for two years now.
My set up is a 200 gallon heavily stocked SPS reef with a 200 gallon sump in basement.  I built a semi horizontal version thats about 760 square inches.  It's lit by nine LED grow bulbs (a mix of soft white, red, and blue).  Less than 90 watts total for 18 hours a day.  I started out with compact flourescentst to light the filter, but started to experiment with LEDs about 6 months ago and found they work very well with about a third the electriciyty.  Also don't have to replace the bulbs every three months.  No skimmer, no reactors, no extra pumps, no green hair algae.  I saw the main display green hair algae disappear over a period of time as the filter gets up to speed.
I can only say nothing worked for the last seven years for keeping nutrients down.  I was tired of starving my fish/reef in an attempt to keep the algae away.  I'm feeding more food than thought possible.  The corals seem to like having the pods and food available to eat 24/7.
My fish include a maculosus angel, red coris wrasse, boomerang trigger, naso tang, and a rabbitfish (all 4-7" long).  I feed them large portions of New Life Spectrum pellet and feed the reef some phyto and lots of Oyster Feast.  The Oyster Feast amounts to 20ml every other day.
If you're good at DIY, it won't be hard to devise somthing that will work.
This might never be popular to say, but skimmers only take out the food you just put in.  Why do they recommend turning them off while feeding or dosing?  Skimmer die hards pick your jaws up off the floor.  No offense to to the old way of reef keeping or it's followers.  The industry will keep developing things for you to buy.  Put this in, but use this to take it out...
It's nice all the food I put in gets used by something in the tank and I avoid having large portions of it removed by a skimmer or reactor.
Algae does the filtering in the ocean.  It can do the same in our tanks if properly sized and maintained.  The algae eats amonia, phosphates and nitrates and puts back in vitamins and amino acids.  Not to mention grows a never ending supply of pods.
I haven't added anything to my tank except calcium, mag, alk, and small amounts of strontium for two years.  No other additives and I only change maybe 10% of the water per month.  The 10% is a result of vacuuming that probably doesn't need to be done.  Also, the water stays clear without the use of carbon.
Like I said, this is probably heresy to all the GFO/Skimmer die hards out there.  But personally, I love only paying for top off water and electricity for my main pump and the three Koralia Magnums in the display.  Looking back, I find it ridiculous to pay for expensive gadgets, chemicals, and filters just to remove what I just put in the tank.
