So I have a 60 gallon rimless that I am working on setting up and was looking for opinions on whether to get a tunze 6208 wavebox (updated version of the nano wavebox) or shoud I try and set up a closed loop setup. I like the wave motion the tunze provides, but I didn't know if it'd put too much stress on the tank, being rimless. Also, I don't know a WHOLE lot about closed loop setups. Just looking for opinions. I've also considered getting a couple Tunze nano streams and putting them in the rocks you can hide them in for some extra flow. What do you guys all think??

closed loops are simple. do you have ANY supplies for either or yet? is the tank drilled? can it be drilled for closed loop yet or are you going to go over the rim and down?

I don't have anything for either at the moment, I have a couple MP10's for flow and a danner mag 7 for a return pump. The tank is drilled just for overflow, glass is really thick, 5/8 I believe. Not too sure how well or easy it'd be to drill. Plus it's a Reef Savvy tank, so I'm not sure what that'd do for the warranty, if there still is one. I was planning on going over the edge for a closed loop, looking at possibly painting the PVC black so it blends well. But I do like the action the wavebox performs. Definitely wouldn't run it 24/7 if I got one.

I am in the process of putting a closed loop system in on my 135 gallon tank. Dart pump with a ocean motion to change up the flow. I am looking forward to getting it set up but, this is my first closed loop tank, so I cannot tell for certain how it is going to work.

Yeah, I still feel like I am a bit in the dark right now as I am putting it together. But, I already have 4 of the 6 holes drilled in the back glass so no turning back now. lol. I decided to go with the closed loop because I was sick of my "cheap" powerheads falling off the wall and blowing sand everywhere.

Makes sense. I like the fact that I'll be able to have the flow coming off the bottom if I want it to, that way I don't need to worry about flooding the sump if it wants to back siphon. Bummer is, I don't think I can drill my tank.

One thing that is important to point out also - is that your tank is a pennisula style tank - that may alter what options may be available. If you drill the Reef Savvy tank, it will void the warranty. Tank is less than one year old - and is 1/2" thick glass. Depends also what you want to keep for corals in there. I had 2 x MP10's in that tank and was able to grow SPS and LPS. The trick for me was positioning of pumps. Since it is a Penninsula style tank - the overflow is in the middle back (or side depending on you set it up) so you basically need to place an MP10 (or mp40 if you want super flow) on each side of the overflow.

In my opinion, it also depends where you want this tank to go. If you want it to be quiet or if you don't mind hearing pumps push water...

I went with Tunze pumps on my 180 build and my oh my those things push some serious water...and although they are much quieter than the Vortecs...they do emitt a slight hum when ramped up...so it comes down to personal preferrence. I don't have any experience on closed loop so I don't have 2cents to offer on that one. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif good luck. That was my favorite tank of all the ones I've had - freshwater and saltwater.

Thanks for the input man! I have two mp10's that I'll transfer, and I really don't mind the sound they put off. I was just curious to see what'd work the best, the tank I have setup at the moment collects detritus like none other. Hopefully with either a wavebox or the vortechs, it'll have enough flow. Hopefully the vortech placement in the peninsula will work well enough, although I don't see how it couldn't. I just didn't know if a wavebox on a rimless tank would be a no no.

Dude, no worries, I'll take good care of her. She's a beauty! Once I get her up and running, I'll definitely make sure to post pics!

Make sure you do all the safety things advised when putting MP10's on 1/2" thick glass. They are not rated for that thick of glass but will stay in place....but I would highly suggest you get some of those sticky square things and run zip tie through it just to make sure you don't find it falling on the floor some day. Also - the MP10W-ES versions had nutrient mode which helped with dietrus and such...not sure what version of the vortecs you have. Good luck - will look forward to some pictures down the road when you have everything setup!

I actually still have a couple spare square things left, so I'm good there. My vorechs have the nutrient mode too, so maybe it'll work better for the new setup. I'm excited as all get out to get the new tank up and running!
