I have a trumpet coral that periodically will send out serveral really long tentacles...about 3 to 4 inches. Is that normal ? Being an LPS, is it just trying to sting something in it's vicinity? I have a nice fuzzy toadstool close by, I'd hate to see it get stung.

Feeding/stinger tentacles. It's trying to eat, which is completely normal. I would be more worried if it wasn't putting out feeding tentacles. They will definitely sting other corals, so be careful. Some corals like Galaxae will send out +12" tentacles.

thanks...that was the answer I was hoping for. The first time I saw it do that, I kind'of freak'd thinking there was something terribly wrong.
