I'm upgrading my 14 biocube to a 29 biocube. The only part I'm really confused on is the substrate. The new tank is going where the old tank is so i have to set it up as I'm taking down the other. So the question is.... New substrate or use the old and top off with new?

I just did an upgrade as well and at the suggestion of another member I used new substrate. The amount of filth that was trapped in the old sand bed was shocking.

Just put a couple of scoops of your old sand n top of the new sandbed, the bacteria will eventually colonize.

Also rinse your sand really well to get rid of the silt, when I transferred tanks i created a dust-storm in the water and it was like looking into milk. Very hard to arrange rockwork and corals without crushing anything.

What will you do with your old tank?
