Anyone have any tips for removing Ich from a reef tank? I bought a pair of black white clowns, within 4 hours they wouldnt eat, next morning they had Ich and were dead by night, this is my second set of clowns /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif, should be noted i have 5 chromis and had a yellow tang that did just fine, never had it, (traded teh tang away)

My water tests are perfect, and i spent 2 hours adjusting them to the tank.

You have to remove the all fish and quareniten/treat them with hypo or copper. Leave the main tank fishless for 8 weeks with no host the ick will die off. There is no proven reef safe ick treatment that works 100% other than "snake oils"

No offense, but your clowns did not catch ich & die from it in 24 hours.

Where did you buy the clowns? What is the salinity of their water? What is the salinity of your water?

How do you know they had ich?

Im not trying to be a smart ***, but 1+1 does not equal 2 here.

IMO too the clowns prob didnt get ick from your tank. Nothing else had it in your tank and if it was that bad wouldnt the yellow have it too? I have had my tank over 3 years now and the only fish I have had issues with was my Blue Hippo. I still have my original clowns and think they are very hardy. Like Xroads said Id look into where you got them.

Just to clarify, Im not saying they sold you bad fish. But if they are running their system at 1.019 or similar, and you put them into a tank that may be 1.026 or 1.028. That is enough to screw their kidneys up.

I bet they had ich when you bought them. Everyone is right don't think they got it from your tank, but it is possible. In there weakened state they got it from your tank. Ich has avery fast life cycle. I would turn up heat to as high as fish can stand it 82to maybe and this sill speed up there life cycle and kill them off. With or with out fish in tank. The flower the temp the longer Ich lingers around and cause more problems then a little higher temp does. Just check you inhabitants can do this, but most should be able to for short periods of let's say a least 24 to 48 hours then repeat after 3 days

Im sorry, but this is 100% incorrect.  Yes you are speeding up the cycle, but it wont kill the ich.  It will just give the ich more generations to kill your fish.
Ich can survive for up to 28 days in your aquarium after you pull all the fish out.  Yes temp will speed up the cycle, but it will not eliminate it.
The only sure what to get rid of ich in your aquarium is to copper treat it, or let it go fishless for 6 weeks.
You can strengthen your fish with good diets including garlic, and a cleaner shrimp or goby will help.
I ask again, why do you think it was ich?  Ich does not kill a previously healthy fish in 24-48 hours.  Brooknella possibly, but not ich.
Here is some good reading on the subject.

I would bet it was Oodinium or Brooklynella. If you see fish scratching against the rocks ect or shaking like they have something on them, or breathing heavy, beware. If any of the fish in same system are doing this, it should be a red flag to the buyer. Try your next clowns from Craig at AC&C I'll guarantee they last more then 24 hours.

As for freshwater, I always added a bit of salt as a preventative measure.  After I started doing that, I never had ich in that tank again.  I don't know what the exact salinity was.
