i am starting a 55 gallon saltwater tank with a 10 gallon sump. i am curious if a via aqua 1800 (480gph) would work as my sump pump return. i will be making my own overflow out of pvc

IMO, I don't think 10 gallons is near enough for a sump, I'd at least go with a 20H.
Is the 480 GPH at 0 head? How high does the pump have to push water?

you're going to only be able to keep about 5gallons in that thing in case the power goes out. 480 is probably good enough, if your pumping it from under the tank on a common stand you'll get 300gph at the top. so 6x per hour total system circulation, good enough I say!

What do you mean, make your own overflow? This could go terribly wrong if you're doing a siphon overflow. I've got an extra siphon overflow box if you want. But best case scenario, and if you don't already have water in there then you could just get it drilled (best case scenario by FARRRRR)

Why would that go horribly wrong? And only reason why I am using a 10 gallon is because its what I had laying around.

What do you want for the overflow box

Andy makes a really good point, you really want to go with an overflow from off the shelf or drill your tank. Drilled is the way to go. Sadly, my tank I have right now is all tempered class, so I have to go with a HOB overflow. The continuous siphon overfrow from CPR is pretty nice. There's low noise and I haven't lost siphon yet. Also make sure you have some ball valves on your overflow if your'e going with PVC.

Like everyone said 10 gallons is way to small imo. By running a 10 gallon idk if you can get the skimmer heater and return pump all in it.

well the siphon overflow is built on some unique and hard to grasp physics principals. if you think you're going to manufacture a siphon overflow system, and being new to the hobby, you might not quite understand exactly what your getting yourself into. It's a common beginners folley. A siphon overflow is fine, but they're just so much easier to buy, and really, it's just cheaper to get the tank drilled than to build a siphon overflow or to buy a siphon overflow. I think you can PROBABLY make a 10 gallon work. But a better choice would be a rubbermaid tub if not a 20 gallon tank.

also, the siphon overflow that I have I'd like to get 20 bucks out of.

We are by no means scolding you just letting you know where you may go wrong and have a very bad time with your start up. If you do use a 10gal then test it with freshwater first and make sure when you turn power off that it don't over fill and go all over the floor.

I have an over flow you can have if you want it. Not sure what is rated for, but you are welcome to it. I live in North liberty.

Ive had my tank running and still am learning things lol. Another thing in this hobby I've found is what might work for one person may not work for another. There still are certain corals I cant keep alive.

Hay nice meeting you and good luck with getting your tank cleared out so you can transform it into a nice looking Saltwater tank. Keep asking question and go with what you feel is right. You will live and learn in this hobby. I know I have and will contunie too.

You have my number and don't ever be afraid to call or text me for help. If I can I will if not I will send you in right direction.
