I have a very slight surface film in my new (last 2 weeks) 90 gallon tank. The tank was rinsed well before it was turned on, also, the sump was carried over same day (and also lightly cleaned, no chemicals) from our 55 gallon tank. any ideas anyone?

What kind of overflow do you have? Internal? External Box?

If it's setup properly, the overflow should be skimming all of that stuff off of the surface.

If you're flow is too low or too high it can prevent the overflow from skimming properly.

The other thing to look for is if your return line might be blowing the surface film away from the overflow and preventing it from being skimmed off properly.

The film itself is pretty normal, that's why they design overflows to skim off of the surface.

im gonna take it for granted that you have a protien skimmer.
do you have a overflow or is your tank drilled?
seems that to get rid of surface film you need to be skimming water off the top of the surface.
once in awhile ill aim my powerheads in a different direction and a pool will develope on the top of the water where its just spinning and not able to run towards the overflow, looking at the top of the water i can see a slight film on the water.
for some reason whether it be your not using a HOB overflow or the drilled overflows are not skimming off the top of the water, your not getting the water off the surface.

I'll have pics of the new tank up soon. It still looks sparse because I am planning to slowly add liverock over the next several months. There is only 40 lbs in it at the moment.

He's getting pretty big (assumption that he is in fact a "he" at all) and I wouldn't be too jealous, he ate my frist two corals (i've opted not to get more) and a couple starfish (including my sandsifting star, I've since changed to sandsifting snails)
