    Hello,
Just want to know how important it is for the feed pump on a Recirculating skimmer to have alot of power?
The skimmer i have came with a mag 12 as a feed pump and the person that i got it from was using it with a 210 gal tank.  I wanted to use it with my 120 and see if i can replace the mag 12 with a mag 5, does anyone know if this would be an issue?
    Thank, you

Skimmers, to my knowledge, usually work best within a certain range. What skimmer is it you bought. I believe you need to match the pump to the skimmer moreso than match the pump to the tank size (if that makes sense).

usually you want a feed pump to be about 2x turnover from your tank volume. i'm using a maxi 1200 on my 120 with a euroreef recirculating

I beleave that the octo recirc skimmers need to be feed with 1 1/2 times your tank voulme.

OK thats the great thing with recirculating skimmers you can do what ever your hearts desires. Just remember the more flow you have going through your skimmer the less time the water gets to spend in the skimmer before it gets pushed out. Think of it as a car wash, if you drive right thought how clean do you think your car will be verse letting it soak for a wile. Just remember to keep the water level at its optimum hight.
    Just some food for thought!!

Can you hook up the feed to one of your overflows? Direct feed of skimmed water and no feed pump required.

yeah i think hooking an overflow to it would be a good idea, is there any pro's and con's to that way?

This is what I do and I get nice, consistent skimmate all the time.
