The cord on my skimmer shorted out yesterday.  The skimmer is a Euro-Reef RS-250 and the pump is a GX-6000.  Unfortunately, it shorted out right at the pump.  There's maybe 1/8" of the wires protruding from the pump casing.  The pump had been working just fine, and I'm confident that there's nothing wrong with the motor or impeller.  My understanding is that these pumps are not serviceable and that I won't be able to fix this.  Is that correct?  A new replacement pumps looks like it will be at least $135 and potentially up to $200 if I upgrade to a more powerful pump.  I would buy used, but they don't seem to be available often.  Thoughts on this?  Is it possible that I can fix this pump?
Also, ideas on upgrades?  Maybe a recirculating mod?  Better pump?  I would love to hear recommendations.

It's a Submersible pump right? If so i would think your up a crick on this one. I would think that there would be no way to repair as everything inside the pump will be sealed in resin.

I also have one of these pumps you could use until you get the pump needed.

Not sure if this would work for you, depends on where the short is I guess.

Very generous of you Don. My only concern is whether or not the volute and venturi would fit on there or not. I would assume that the impeller would work as I doubt they would change the size of the magnet on the impeller. At $55 I guess it's worth it to order it on a gamble. If it works, I saved a bunch of $$. If it doesn't, I'm just out the cost of shipping. Thanks for pointing this out Don!

    Hey Jeremy,
That short is right at the pump...there's not enough cord to work with.
I ordered from these guys and like 2 days later, they went out of business!  Doh!  Filed a claim with PayPal...hopefully I get a refund soon.  Oh well...that's life dealing with Internet retailers!
Anyway, read a bunch of stuff online and I'm going to go with a Bubble Blaster 3000 instead (http://reefbuilders.com/2009/11/13/bubble-blaster-pump-hy3000-needle-wheel/).   Great reviews, 3 year warranty and 95 watts less power consumption  (yes..95 watts!)  The GPH is lower, but because of the difference in the design of the pump, I can get away with a more efficient, smaller pump.  Craig carries these and I'll have a pump in about a week or so for less than I could find it anywhere online.  So three weeks without a skimmer.  Wow.  Sucks...but looking forward to the new pump.  At least there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
