Should I stick to drinking Vodka or let my tank have some?

I am currently debating whether or not to start Vodka dosing.  The reason being I have a pretty heavy bio load in my 60 gallon and am starting to get a few small patches of briopsis, hair algae, and even bubble algae.  YUK!!!
As of now I have 10 chromis, 2 wrasses, a helfrichi firefish, and a blue spot goby along with a nearly uncountable amount of coral.
I have been trying to cut back on feeding but don't want a bunch of skinny sickly fish.
Not sure why but my P04 levels are always near 0.1 ppm (Hanna Checker) and nitrates are always undetectable (API) yet algae seems to be growing pretty well over the least couple weeks.
Being vodka dosing is said to help drastically reduce nitrate and PO4 levels it seems like a no brainer but I am still sort of leery about it.
    What should do?

This is a conudrum. I find I regularly drink more than I dose. I do dose though and it does lower my nitrate to near 0 levels.

I would also be interested in learning a bit more about dosing. Any recommended readings?

I've read that article like 3 times and I'm still not sure if it's really something I want to try. Seems to me I should be able to find a happy medium of nutrient levels and algae growth without wasting perfectly good alcohol.

I dosed it for about a year and had amazing colors and pretty good growth. I'm tempted to start doing it again, but that's why I was thinking Biolpellets instead. What do you folks think that are running the pellets? Anyone that has done both??

just try some 5'o clock vodka and I don't think you will notice in the wallet. Pick a time of day to dose so you won't forget and start small like the chart indicates. You can decide for yourself after a couple months whether its worth it. Get the half gallon and you will have plenty to drink also. I never dosed though, until I had this nano without a sump. I did just fine with carbon, gfo, cheato, and a skimmer in the past.

I would drink the vodka, and run biopellets. That way the tank is more stable and you don't haft to worry about dosing everyday.

Hmm sort of forgot about the bio pellets options. I do like the idea of not having to dose anything and I have an extra TLF reactor laying around not in use.

The problem I may have is keeping Alk low enough. It is my understanding that carbon dosing requires you to have an Alk more closely matched to NSW which is around 7. I barely have my CA reactor dripping as it is and my Alk stays around 11.

Part of me really just wants to ride this phase out and hope limiting the amount of food I put in the tank will help, another part of me thinks if I don't do something soon my tank may turn into a lush green jungle.

Waverz, do the pellets not act like GFO and drop your alk when first put to use?

Not sure if they actually "drop" Alk or not. I don't want to end up with a bunch of burnt tipped SPS. More research to do I guess.

I have been very happy with my biopellets.  I switched from Zeovit to biopellets with great results.  I always had under .02 ppm PO4 and 0 NO3 with both Zeovit and Biopellets.  Zeovit is pretty similar to vodka dosing, as you are essentially just dumping your carbon dose into your tank.  When things are balanced it can work well, however, you can run into cyanobacteria problems if your bacteria strains get out of balance (it can happen even in an ULNS).  So the localized carbon source with biopellets is a big plus in my experience.

Ok, so those of you who do carbon dosing or have in the past. Did your Alk levels drop on their own after you started dosing?

I didn't have to alter my calcium reactor at all and my alk stayed locked in.  I actually noticed a bit of a dip in pH though.  I've heard this is temporary and due to an increased bacteria population decreasing oxygen levels slightly.
