Just that, when I bought my aquarium the guy had been using Seachem's Matrix.  I have continued to use it but not sure why?  Is it something that I need to use?  Right I have it in a basket on my HOB filter, is there any benefit to this?

I am assuming you have Seachem Matrix™ Filter Media
It is a media that is supposed to absorb ammonia and act a bit like a biological filter also (its does essentiallywhat Bio-balls do).
If you have LR and no issues with the system you can try not using it and watch your levels.
    Here is a link http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Matrix.html

    hope that helps
