I am setting up a 180 gallon reef tank. Does anyone have a sand suggestion. I am looking into and like the ideal of fine sugar sand. Thanks,

I love the sugar sand look but can tell you from experience, DO NOT USE IT. It blows everywhere, moves, annoys corals, etc. I regret it and once I set up my new one, I will be using a much heavier, coarser sand.

Most people prefer the sugar sand since it's better for sand dwelling life like sand sifting stars and things like that. If you do use the sugar sand, make sure you you get some snails and gobies to keep it clean for you. Reefified is right, you will start out with a sand storm and you will have to adjust your flow to keep it from blowing around, but once things are adjusted, it should be just fine.

If you want some free sugar sand from an established tank, I may have some available for you if you're willing to pick it up. Let me know if you're interested.

I put about 160 pounds into my 150 gallon and that gave me a 2-3 inch bed. FWIW I have never had the issue of sand blowing around. I use two MP40ES's myself /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif

I agree with this depending on flow.
Love the look of "sugar sand" (currently using Southdown) and as I increased flow I need to be cognizant of which direction the flow is directed or I end up with piles and bare-bottom in the middle of the tank.  Can blow around and irritate corals, also can get kicked around by fish.  (I have between 3,896-4,870 gph in a 72g.)
