So, I have a 135 gallon and a 55 gallon. In the 135, I have a sailfin (7-8 inch) and a powder brown (4 inch). They get along great now. I have a large yellow in my 55 gallon I want to move to my 135. Will the tangs get along? The yellow (6-7 inches) gets along with the tank mates in the 55 gal. Just don't want the tangs to fight too much. Thoughts? ...

Sailfins and yellows are both zebrosoma tangs so could be a problem. Sailfins are notoriously bullies too. You can try but be prepared for a quick rescue.

Yeah, that was why I was a bit worried about adding the two together. He and the powder worked out their issues within a few hours. Never really aggressive, just carefully sizing each other up. Now they swim together. But the powder is smaller and was in the tank first. Then the sailfin was added. And they are different genus, that is why I am worried more about the yellow and sailfin vs the powder brown and sailfin.

I have the same combo you are going for and they get along fine. Of course after reading all this, you'll probably have the aggressive sailfin going after the yellow tang.

The problem is the typically more aggressive/territorial sailfin is already in its home. The yellow will more than likely get a pretty good *** kicking for a few days. It sounds like they are of similar size, but being large I would assume both would be more aggressive and territorial than smaller fish. Some rework of the rock, or some way to separate the two within the same tank may help out with getting the two to play a little nicer.
Many people keep them in the same tank together, so it definitely can be done successfully. You just need to be careful on how you introduce them.

I had my sailfin for 6 months then added my Purple to the tank. My sail was 4 inches and the purple is 8. It took a few days and now they're buddies.

I have used Copolino's technique for angelfish acclimation for acclimating tangs. Instead of the dump and pray, get the fish used to seeing each other. I use an egg crate divider or clear critter carriers to accomplish this.

I'd be careful using egg crate just because it can be pretty harsh on the fish if they are costantly banging into it.

Timely discussion. I have Dave's sailfin in my 120 with a yellow and they get along fine. The sailfin in Taki's tank will soon go into the tank at Grove & Platt, which has a yellow and a blue hippo so I will prob have to keep them separated for a few hours. That should be challenging. Then, my other 120 has the fish from BigD's tank, which will be going into Taki, also has a yellow and a sailfin in it. I got this situation all around me!!

Since the salfin has been in there for a while use COPP's method. I have 4 in my 120 ..tail ring, naso, powder brown and yellow eyed kole they are peas and carrot's they are in with blue line angel, emperor and a regal everyone is happy happy happy. Only problem i'd see is my experience with salfin's isnt good they are kinda grouchy no matter what you do.. Mine always swam around throwing his fin up at everyone .. How's the Lamarks doing have you got him is the Display yet??

Alright looks like I just need to separate them for a few days. I will definitely try this method in the not too distant future. Just not sure exactly when I will try this. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

Sad news on the lamark. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif he was doing so well in QT. it had been like three weeks. He was eating well, swimming fine and literally 2 days before I was going to move him over, he died. Just found him at the bottom of the QT. water parameters were fine, etc. don't know what it was maybe bad QT heater or? ... But I was pretty bummed. Especially since I was so close to getting him in the display. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif he would have been beautiful in there. I will be looking for his replacement once we move.
