As some of you may have read, the SPS's I bought at Springfest from YZ went in to RTN, including others who also bought from him.  I have some questions:
     1. Is it contagious?  I ask because other SPS I had previously have all pershished  from RTN except for a few.
     2. Is there a timeframe/one should wait before introducing new SPS?
     3. I have a few birdnests that have the tips dead.   I'm guessing that they had started RTN but it doesn't seem to be progressing.  Would it be wise to cut off the dead tips and a little in to the living?  Would dipping help (because it didn't with the others)?
    Thanks![IMG]

    YES & NO
RTN (Rapid Tissue Necrosis) is usually caused by stress of some type.  The new corals may have been used to a different temp, lights, salinity, or several other issues that could have stressed it out & caused it to RTN.
The contagious part is when the tissue/chemicals of the dying coral is floating around your tank.  It can induce the same stress on other corals in your tank.
RTN usually starts out at the bases & moves upward.  The tips may have been affected by the above causes.  Birdsnest have very delicate tips as it is.
For future instances, immediately pull & frag a coral showing RTN, once started it rarely stops.  Cut a good half inch plus above the affected area.  Keep in a seperate tank if possible.
RTN is very rapid, hence the name & will usualy run its course in 36 hours.  If you are seeing some burned tips, but not progressing you are probably ok.  A dip wil not slow or help RTN
This is one reason I suggest acclimating all livestock people put in their tanks.  Its not just for fish.
    Hope this helps

Craig, thanks for the great reply.  Fortunately I don't currently have RTN but your points are well said.

Thanks for the info Craig[IMG]  All the SPS's were in my QT and were acclimated as well as dipped in CoralRx.  Most of them succumbed within the first 4 days.  Since all of them were frags, there wasn't an opportunity to save any pieces.  Most of them died within 6 hours and the tissue loss started at the bases.  Now I know why the tips of the birdsnests were affected.  It hasn't progressed so I think I'm safe[IMG]  Thanks again Craig!!
