This pump was recommended as a replacement for my aging Mak4. I'm wondering how it will affect the performance to throttle it down to 1" tubing from the 2"/1.5" inlet/outlet. Anyone using one of these? I'll be using it with 7" of head pressure and a few 90's and a couple of unions and ball valves.
I need to take care of this pretty soon.
Thanks for any input you might have.

I wouldn't do it. If you're going to use a pump that has a large output, you should keep it plumbed at that size for as much of the run as you can. I believe that the sooner you throttle it down to the smaller size, the more of an impact it has...but a better person to ask would be Gered. He had to take a class in college about all this hydraulic stuff and has a really good handle on the topic.

I would make sure you have 2 1/2 going into it if you dont it could hurt the pump. Useing a smaller diameter on the exhaust would be just like throttling it back. Reeflo reccomends not throttling it back more than i believe 30%. I have a a hammerhead hybred i have the correct size comeing in and out then i use a gate valve to throttle it back. If you need to throttle it back alot i would put a t in and run the excess water into the sump. The less water you have running through it the less power it uses but like i said you dont want to throttle it back to much. If you want to know exactly what its pumping call reeflo and they can figure it out by how many elbows and head etc you have. They are a great company to deal with

The 1" tubing is already installed and run through the floor. I'm not interested in changing that out. SO, can anyone recommend a different pump for me to use? How about the Iwaki 40 RLXT or RLT? I have a 30 RLXT that is a great pump, but just doesn't have enough flow to do the job.

Good pumps but i like the reeflo pumps better. The reason i ask if you bought is because i might be selling a reeflo hammerhead hybred once i get my coral and fish sold havent decided yet for sure. It takes 1 1/2 pipe but you might get away with the 1 on the outlet i can ask reeflo for sure. the pump isnt that old though. If interested you can call me at 319-239-3409

Jim, what is the target output of the pump you want in terms of GPH? Any good pressure rated pump should be able to handle 7' of head with a few 90 degree turns. I have had good luck with Reeflo pumps in the past and I would recommend them as well.

I'm thinking I'd like about 1,000-1,000 gph. I'm currently using a Mak-4 which the RC calculator is somewhere around 900 gph. I only need a little more flow than that.

Currently thinking about an Iwaki 55 or a Blueline HD, but if someone knows something bad about either of these, let me know.

Is this going on your 57 gallon? That seems like a lot of turnover for a small system. If you are adamant about getting these pumps, I would go with the Iwaki.

Since I'm splitting some of the flow off to the refugium, I don't think the flow will be too much. I want just a little more than the Mak 4. Maybe the Iwaki 40 woiuld be enough. I know the Iwaki 30 I have is NOT enough.
