I am looking around trying to find a very, very quiet in-sump skimmer. Right now I am running a Reef Octopus NWB110, it is a great skimmer, but it is just a little loud. I dont know if I have a crappy pump or what. So, what skimmer do you guys find to be the most silent?

Whats the noisiest part of the skimmer? Is it just pump noise, or the water dumping out of it. I don't know much about that skimmer, but I bet some tuning and modding might be able to quiet it down for you.

I'm cant pinpoint exactly why it is so noisy but the most noise seems to be from the intake and exhaust.

What types of mods do people do?

Maybe play around with the "muffler" on the air intake. If the NWB has the same one as my SRO unit its a pretty basic design that shouldn't really be noisy. The only noise issue I had on my skimmer was the water exiting the thing. I just put it in a little deeper water so the discharge was partly submerged and then put on a sponge type thing to lessen the splashing. - I think its an intake sponge filter off a mag drive pump or something. But then again I my entire system is quite loud, so what I consider not very noisy for my skimmer may be entirely different than you.
