Just got an open brain coral yesterday it has a little rip about a quarter inch on top. Its not the area where the feeder tentacles and mouths are located. Noticed when it was closed down for the night its filaments were over that area. My question is do they do this as a protective measure as well as to heal the area? Thanks!

A picture would help. Coral can be pretty resilient. I would guess you are right that it is trying to regenerate flesh over the tear. We have a scoly that has been through about everything - including getting stung by a hammer that created a hole (similar to what you describe) and has continued to thrive.

I think that will heal - it looks pretty healthy other than that injury.
