Ok I'm cycling my tank. I'm using BRS pukani dry live rock. I have it in the tank and I have the water in there. I have sand (used to be live sand) from my old set up. My question is... can I use that sand to cycle the tank or should I buy live sand and put in there to cycle? I want to cycle the tank without using fish (damsels)

you can use it, and the sand will become alive. The term alive means full of bacteria, which is what adds in the nitrification process of your tank.

Get the going with all the filters, pumps, lights and so on. Feed it a couple times even though it is empty. If you can add a small piece of raw shrimp it will help. Also add a teaspoon of pure ammonia if you can find some and it will help.

After a week or so, see if you can find someones tank you can suck the detritus from the bottom of the tank or sump and add to your tank. This will have even more bacteria and possible some pods that will help get everything going as well.

I was going to try the pure ammonia, but couldn't find it anywhere. Everything was scented, etc. Ick
