Maybe you guys can help me out. As you can see below, things are getting crowded in my 120. On the left hand side, there are a pair of MP40's and on the upper right there is a Tunze 6060. I would like to add a powerhead to improve the flow through the center and/or the right hand side, however I am hamstrung because there is not enough space to add an MP20/40 to the right hand side, tunzes are almost too big to put in the front right, and I absolutely hate the new tunze design (the ball shaped ones).
So I ask, wherein this impractical yet boner inspiring reef tank shall I place a new powerhead, and what type of PH should I put in it? Ideas, thoughts, opinions?

I know it will look bad but if you need more flow try to put something by the over flow on the back pane and direct it to the left. You can try to hide it with rock or somthing. Not sure why you would need more flow it looks good the way you have it going off the surfice agitation

Wouldn't a closed loop be the easiest? You could put the output where ever you wanted and even in multiple spots...

Agree with Adam...closed loop all the way....

    Thanks man!
I considered a closed loop too, the problem is space, the tank of course isn't drilled for a closed loop, and it is against the wall on two sides, (the back and the right), I could do some plumbing to the left, however there's a frag tank there, I could probably move it over a little bit for some PVC. It almost doesn't even seem worth it to do a 2 way, I would probably go for an OM4 or 4 way squirt. I definitely planned on doing a closed loop on my next tank anyways!

If I do a closed loop.....Think I could eliminate the other powerheads?

I like the look of your tank. What kind of lights are you running, and is that a bare bottom? I have the same size 120 but need to do something different to eradicate my xenia.

Not barebottom, I'm rocking some course grade sand. I've got 2 250 watt Radium 20k metal halides on Lumenarc mini III reflectors, and a pair of 50 watt T5's one is Geismann true actinic, and an ATI special blue. Eradicate xenia? I've never been able to keep the stuff alive, get a good skimmer and do frequent water changes, you'll starve the hell out of it in a few months! lol

Dude quit being a sissy and punch a hole in the wall from the utility room then add another mp40.

I would add a surge device. A small 10 gallon tank above the level of the current tank would do wonders for you. The outlet could be just below the water surface, so minimally invasive.

    lol yeah well......
A surge tank is something that I had considered before, how fast will the flow rate need to be up to the surge tank in order get it to close the siphon if I were to use a 1" drain?

That is the beauty of a surge. You can set the rate at whatever dump time you want. Some people will use two small pumps, and turn one off at night. Then you go from dumping every 10 miuntes to every 20 minutes.

Use the borneman design with the toilet float & it works perfect.

I built a Borneman surge device before and it failed to work, the water velocity wasn't flowing upward in the reservoir fast enough to pull the drain plug, it just lifted the bouy up and opened the drain just far enough to allow slow and steady flow through. I wonder if a Carlson would work better? Again I'm still concerned about the amount of flow, I don't have space to put in another pump, So I would opt to use my external system pump I'm already currently on. I'm going to start a sketchup file for this idea.
