    I have a 400w industrial ballast/pendant that I would
like to use over a prop/frag tank. The mogul is mounted vertically at
    the bottom of the ballast.
    The bulb is single ended.

My question is: Does this type of lamp NEED to be mounted horizontally or can I get away with using it as is?
    Thanks for reading

You can use it as is.

I am assuming it also has the reflector that came with it which is meant to be mounted vertically anyway...

It's probably no where near as good as a horizontal bulb in reflector made for aquariums but it should work.

No, it does not currently have a reflector. I am planning on making one when I get ready to install the prop tank. It will be something like this... only not as aesthetically pleasing and made from sheet metal.

Why not mount the socket so that the bulb is horizontal and make a regular spider light reflector similar to this?  https://diyreef.authsecure.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=55_63_93&products_id=566&osCsid=67188bd5ebf98a595dea952479cef644

Its not a remote ballast. I would need to take it apart and rewire it, which I was hoping to avoid if possible.
