Like so many reefing mishaps, i did something i knew was dumb. I bought an anemone, knowing damn well they eat fish.

This morning jackie yelled that my anemone was eating my banner-fish! It had caught just the very tip of its long dorsal extension and it was struggling hard to get away. When i tried to free it, the fish dove into the nem and i had to rip it out. When i did, it pulled all the scales skin of its breast. I cant find it, but i'm sure its dead.

I hate that thing, it grabs me and stings when i clean the tank. when i frag it, my ears go numb. Thats potent neurotoxin! I also lost my "large" cherub angel and suspect its the culprit... I had a love hate relationship with that butterflyfish too. It ate all of my corals-another one that i shoulda known better!

Moral of the story. Don't put anemones with fish, and don't put bannerfish with corals!

Sorry to hear that man...seems like it was pretty stressful. This is exactly why I am keeping a separate tank for the nems...your story reinforces it. Sorry bout the fish.

Sweet. They prefer expensive fish, it seems.

You've never had a fish unaccounted for? Are you in anemone denial?

I have had plenty of fish come up missing before and after anemones. They find a hole or some unseen spot in the Rock work and expire, crabs make short work of them.

just like most animals it needs to feed occasionally if you feed it, it will not predate on your other animals as often you may wish to move it to a place where it wont sting you as much

Can you provide supporting documentation for that? No offense but I think you are incorrect.i feed this tank a lot and it catches a lot and i have never seen a difference.
My tank setup is challenging, my face is typically submerged when i touch it.

I have a mini carpet and it has never eaten a fish or snail or hermit. I do direct feed it once every day however. And i have also never been stung by mine either. But it will likely have to find a new home before too long cause it is just getting to big and taking up much space in my 29.

I only keep a maroon clown and lawnmower blenny with my 2 very large bta's. The lawnmower has been stung a half dozen times because he insists on sitting on the same rock as the nems. He seems pretty messed up when it happens but always returns the next day. I have moved the nems multiple times but he just moves wherever they are. I can only assume he feels a sense of protection despite paying the price regularly.

Mine doesnt sting, at least painfully, but it is like pulling duct tape of my hand (maybe that's where it gets its specific epithet s. tapetum!?). Any time we touch a cnidarian we are getting stung by thousands of cnidocysts, regardless of whether we feel it or not.

I have cut them up, this is when i notice that it makes my ears go numb. Its possible im just sensitive though.
