    Speaker: Scott Fellman

My name is Scott Fellman, and I’m the consummate “fish nerd/entrepreneur”!

Much of my life centers around tweaking protein skimmers, scraping algae, cleaning up spills, or figuring out how to unglue my fingers. I’ve been keeping freshwater and marine aquariums since I was a kid, and during that time, I have maintained all sorts of aquariums, fish bowls, plastic boxes, and just about anything that can hold water. My passion is creating natural-looking and functioning biotope aquariums which represent unusual ecological niches. I love this hobby and the crazy people in it!

I’ve mentored fellow hobbyists for over fifteen years, starting on Bob Fenner’s WetWebMedia.com site, where I was also Co-Editor of WWM’s Conscientious Aquarist online magazine for a couple of years. In 2006-2007, I served as president the Marine Aquarium Society of Los Angeles County.

I’ve written many of articles for publications such as the late Freshwater and Marine Aquarium Magazine, Ultramarine UK, Tropical Fish Hobbyist, Marine Fish and Reef USA Annual, Amazonas, and many online venues, such as Reef Addicts, Advanced Aquarist, and Reefs.com, Reef Builders, and Reef2Reef , as well as my daily blog, “The Tint”, on my Tannin Aquatics web site, where I blog on a variety of aquarium-related topics.

In addition to my writing, I have racked up the frequent-flyer miles, traveling all over the U.S. and internationally, speaking at clubs and events about all sorts of reef-and aquarium-related stuff. I have presented at MACNA XIX in Pittsburgh, MACNA XX in Atlanta, MACNA XXI in Atlantic City, MACNA XXII in Orlando, MACNA XXIII in Des Moines, MACNA XXIV in Dallas, MACNA XXV in Florida, MACNA XXVII in Washngton as well the old IMAC Conferences in both Chicago and Long Beach and numerous other local events. I’ve spoken several times at the Reef-a-Palooza conference in my native So Cal, as well. I keep threatening to complete a book before this century is over…

I was co-owner of Los Angeles-based online marine livestock retailer, Unique Corals, which specializes in sustainably-collected, aquacultured, and captive propagated corals, fishes, and invertebrates to the hobby. We enjoyed amazing growth and a large fan following in the four years I was with the company. Following my lifelong passion to embrace unusual aquatic niches, I sold my interest in Unique in 2016 to launch Tannin Aquatics, which specializes in providing what we like to call “aquatic botanicals”, as well as other goods and ideas for specialized aquatic hobbyists. We’ve enjoyed meteoric growth, and have turned on many hobbyists to this exciting speciality since we’ve been in operation.

When I’m not trying to replicate the oceans, rivers and streams of the world in my aquariums, I’m usually surfing at my local beach, hiking the canyons of Malibu, writing, or just chilling at home with my wife.

Will the vendors be selling on the floor before the auction starts?

Or is the floor open so you can see the auction items only?

Or will the vendors then be selling items that are left in the auction?

@Bryan-1@Bryan-1 I think you've got a few things mixed up? Let me see if I can explain:

The auction and the show floor are two completely separate things.

The show floor opens at noon, selling starts then.

Anyone can enter items in the auction. It's not something for the vendors only - you can bring your own things to enter.

No one is required/forced to enter anything into the auction. So it's not like anything the vendors bring will automatically go to the auction if they are not sold by 5pm - it doesn't work like that.

The auction is something we (GIRS) haven't had before, but this is a common thing for other shows. We will be posting a set of auction rules/guidelines soon

Can a person place a reserve on a item to be sold?
For instance: If we bring a light and we would like to get $150.00 for it. The light won't go for less than that...

$1 + 30% auction fee - is that normal? It seems rather high to me.

@Dave@Dave no this is not the current one, there will be a dedicated thread once the guidelines for this fest are completed (probably tomorrow or Sunday)

It'll be a flat 20% take, no first dollar any more.

As per reserve, vendors will be given one or two free reserve stickers, and anything more than that are $2/reserve sticker. If you have one of these on, and it doesn't hit reserve price, you will get the item back, and only be out the reserve sticker price.

I'll have the new link of rules shortly, waiting on one final peer edit.

Total raffle donations are about to breach $5000!

And that's actual "street value" prices - i.e. what any consumer can buy it for online w/o shipping!! I'm going to post the full list with prices later today!

I may be the only one who is slightly confused by the vendor listing graphic. Is there some delineation between the vendors on the left vs the right (i.e. salt vs fresh or livestock vs drygoods)? It seems like they were intentionally separated into two alphabetic lists.
