Reef keepers have been searching for the magic formula of keeping a colorful healthy reef aquarium for decades.

Some will argue that a sucessful aquarium will need to have medal halide lights pushing 500 par at the bottom of the tank along with a super monster skimmer and enough flow to push a battleship.  Others will argue that it has to be a nutrient deficient system with LED lights and a super computer to run everything.

The formula I tell people to use is P+P+P

    Personality

    Planning

    Patience

Like any formula, if you don't use all the ingredients, it wont work out like you want it.

Personality.  Your tank has to mirror your personality.  If you are not computer & technology savvy, then having a system that is ran by controllers, and lots of different fancy gadgets is probably not for you.  On the flip side, if you love programming and technology, a tank ran by controllers using programmable lights, pumps, automatic water changes, and filters may be for you. Whatever you choose, it has to fit you!  Do you want a predator tank that houses big mean fish, or a garden tank that is a work of art?

Planning.  This is the most critical part of setting up your reef aquarium.  What do you want to be like?  A fish only tank?  Do you want to stock anemones, LPS corals, SPS corals?  How about Butterfly fish or trigger fish that may ear your corals or shrimp.  Depending on what you want plays a major role in how you need to set it up.
Patience.  Once you get going, have patience.  Everyone wants to do the mega store fish deal where you take home a fish tank in one hand, and a bag of fish in the other.  This will not work in reef tanks.  You will kill a lot of animals, waste a lot of money, and become frustrated very quickly.  A reef tank will typically take a year to fully mature and become its own ecosystem

i agree and also some people dont have enough money for all the high tech stuff so they may have to just do it all "the old" way and some may even find more joy in doing it all

This is all great information. One thing I would consider is something i struggled with when i first got started. The differences between lps sps and so forth and how each has their own type of care needed

+1 on personality. Many ways to skin a...reef?

Me being a "break from the herd" kind of guy, I was immediately sucked in by the concept of the Algae Scrubber and even more sucked in when I saw a bunch of people bashing it.

And I'm a tech savvy guy with no spare funds, so while I can envision a system ran by computer and all sorts of whizbang monitoring via web, with DIY LED on 16 PWM channels and an Arduino with custom code for totally frickin awesome light control...I have 8 T5HOs on rotarty timers.

I like it Craig. Good job!
If you are looking for another "P" for the equation try persistence (or perseverence?). Use boards like GIRS or RC to learn about what it takes to care for the animals we keep as well as to not give up when you it a bump in the road (note: when not if). Other hobbyists via these boards and *good* LFS employees are the best tools to work through the inevitable problems that will crop up from time to time...and they are free!.

I like it as well! Short and to the point. I agree on the article as well on the difference between coral groups. I think if you can offer good articles like these, written by yourself, it will help make buyers feel more comfortable about purchasing from your site. They are not just buying from some website that copy and pasted manufacturer info into their text. Its good to hear the thoughts of the owner/workers who are selling the products or species and their professional opinion.
Keep up the good work and can't wait to see the new site!
