Stealing physical merchandise then reselling it is not the same as copying a design because coralvue still has the merchandise where in your comparison the jewelry stores merchandise was stolen...

Coralvue isnt going anywhere because of the reef octopus.

But for us to get all worked up over this is petty because we are consumers not them.

People will still buy gyres from coralvue why because you can call them if you want where with jebao you cant really do that you can only email.

In the end its what the consumer wants and can afford that is all.

Imo 275 for a gyre 150 isnt much at all but thats my opinion... I have 3 of them ;)

Not exactly and apples-to-apples comparison as Jebao/Jecob/whatever has not physically stolen Gyres from Maxspect and is selling them cheaper but I get your point. I don't think that either of you is going to change the others mind though so let's not let this thread go downhill

I also have used Jebao products (WP-40) and had one crap out on me, no biggie, it was an early version and I replaced it with a Gyre (2nd day they were available) and that one had a bad controller and bad bushing, both of which they replaced for free very quickly, and it has ran like a champ ever since.

I also have 3 Koralias that have been running for who knows how long. To me, you buy a quality product and it won't break and you don't have to worry about it. I'd rather do that than risk my reef not having flow where it's supposed to for a couple days. So I would not be buying a knock-off gyre anytime soon myself.

    Stealing is stealing.

Some people care, some people don't.

But if it doesn't affect me directly doesn't make it right.

Anyone can go out of business. Ask Icecap.

False equivalency. The small jewelry store has 0 item left to sell. Maxspect etc can still sell their product, it's just that Jebao is also selling their version of it. If Jebao actually physically robbed Maxspects factory and then relabeled them as their own maybe I'd stop buying them. Maybe.

Patent infringement is nothing new. Jebao just doesn't try to hide anything. Hell I'm sure people try do to something similiar with "rare" zoas or corals. It's up to the buyer to decide what company they want to do business with: (i.e. Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-a). Also look at what car you drive .

Me, I bought some WP stuff and it broke, so I won't buy it again merely for the hassle it caused. Same reason I bought a gyre, had an issue with the prior wavemaker and decided to switch.

You know I miss that commodity pork that came in the giant silver can with the pig decal on it. Don't laugh but that stuff was the best ever to make BBQ pork with, so much fat. I used to buy it off my elderly neighbor with cigarettes. Sometimes the generic is better. They stopped making it years ago but whenever anyone asks me if I think government pork is a good thing, I say absolutely. It was so good I had to mention it semi-randomly on a thread on a reef club forum.

Everyone will make something similar to someone's produce. That's good for the buyers because it drives down the price. Then we can make a choice for what product we want to buy by our own opinion in witch one we like..... I like cheaper pricing.

It's different in that case. In the case of the gyre the only thing stolen was intellectual property, Which if the US companies would buckle down and depend on sale volume with a lower margin per unit, they wouldn't have to worry so much about the IP costs of RD as they pan out over years.

When a store is robbed, they have stolen sell-able items, actual stock, that has already been purchased, and can be sold as is. IP isnt typically sold as is, it then has to be designed out casted and built.

While yeah its similar, and yeah the gyre company will lose sales over it. They have ways around it. And no one could afford a real lawsuit against a Chinese company, they will simply dissolve and be created with a new name, like... IDK... JECDO. or something.

The fact remains that the devices, while some times of an inferior quality, still run, and cost 1/3 the price. In a hobby that quickly gains members with flashy thing addictions, you bet your bumbum that people are going to buy the cheapest thing they can, many people don't even really have enough to support the hobby correctly! Hell Even I own three sets of WP's they care cheap and move water with a random setting!

(Is it right... No.. Is it reality, yup)

Good thing a few of you ^ don't have bank ideas. Just saying. Makes it easier to not consider/care about the ethics involved when it isn't your investment.

Just remember, patents are good for 15 years. After that fair market takes over. 15 years is the time a company or person gets to make bank before fair market. It's that R&D and intellectual property protection concept.

We dont own coralvue either. Im kinda confused as to why you few are so upset. Its not our product although I own some of their products. They will sort it all out.

No need to attack our character or make assumptions because we dont care if another company makes a WaveMaker. I personally have real matters to worry about that involve my life.

    Goodluck with being upset though

Well in this specific instance I can't get mad because I'm fine with foreign corporations ripping each other off. To me they may as well be two different Chinese high school sports teams complaining that the other team cheated. "Huh, how bout that?" When Jebao took from Tunze and Hydor I felt similar because it's China vs. Germany and Italy. It's not like we produce anything here to be protectionist about. It seems like 95% of saltwater dry goods are made by companies from 3 places. Germany, Italy, and China. We grant foreign companies patents but really what benefit is it to me other than cheap prices? All the profits go back to those countries. So even if my wallet had morals, what is it to me that a foreign corporation muscles in on the business of two other foreign corporations through shady practices?

This is my last response on this subject, but here is something to think about from someone who has been screwed by an insurance company.

Gyre pumps are UL listed, another expense that they have incurred to bring their products to market, which drives up the cost. Jebae products are not. Many homeowner policies have small print that voids coverage if a fire was started by a non UL covered electrical product.

I hope none of you have to go through a fire and have to deal with an insurance company, but if you do, keep this is mind.

Here is a quote taken from an insurance site.

The UL stands for "Underwriters Laboratory". It used to be
an Insurance Industry organization, but now it is independent
and non-profit. It tests electrical components and equipment
for potential hazards. When something is UL-listed, that means that the UL has tested the device, and it meets their requirements for safety - ie: fire or shock hazard. It doesn't necessarily mean that the device actually does what it's supposed to, just that it probably won't kill you.

The UL does not have power of law in the U.S. -- you are
permitted to buy and install non-UL-listed devices. However,
insurance policies sometimes have clauses in them that will
limit their liability in case of a claim made in response to
the failure of a non-UL-listed device.

Ah, they finally stepped up then.

That was one of the big arguments on the knock off pumps was they werent UL listed

My biggest complaint is the product manuals being indiscernible. I want to start a business that writes product manuals in gibberish Mandarin to export with our goods to the Chinese. Then there will be youtube videos from China of people complaining about how American products annoy them with manuals that make no sense.
