What are you trying to say, Jim? You got an issue with me, you want to squash or Something? I wouldn't run your mouth, by beating around the bush, like you are right now. Your a punk dude.
There isn't a damn thing I've said on this forum, that I wouldn't say to each and every one of your faces. So remember that when your writing your response. Laugh all you want, but I promise ya, I will have the last laugh

I guess I'm finding a hard time biting my tongue on this one, for one, no one in any post said "hey mike your being a dick please stop" or "hey mike you act like a pissy 6 year old, please stop" not ONCE. Yet you are so self absorbed you automatically think everything must be related to you. I'm sorry, I'm so sick of reading stupidly bad advice and smart *** comments right now I want to bang my head against the wall. Boasting about having tons of money and blah blah blah might be cool with your boys but that **** doesn't matter here and frankly no one cares, dollar for dollar you haven't invested near what half the members of this club have, their not boasting. Maybe your high strung, I couldn't say, but for Christs sake you were roasting a 12 year old for not knowing how to take care of a tank, forgive me if I'm wrong here but weren't you asking questions about taking care of yours a few weeks ago? It's not about pushing people into what you believe is right or wrong, it's about sharing information and letting the people choose what works best for them. Honestly if this were 3 or 4 years ago you would have had a vacation from this site....possibly permanent, this board is alot more forgiving!

If some one rights a article most of it can be very useful so they tacky the article to the top. Even if everything isnt 100%. Every article will be different just like every experience which is what peoples articles are based off. Drs is one of the longest living carrers known but still called practice of medicine.

    ON UV's
YES they only kill what goes through them.
YES they are effective against controlling ick outbreaks.
NO they do not cure ick.

Live aquaria along with most major public aquariums use UV sterilizers for one reason THEY WORK not only to clarify water but to prevent major outbreaks due to disease and parasites.
They will prevent a few crypto from multiplying into thousands by keeping them under control.

The problem is that many hobbyist fail to understand that you can not put a 5 watt UV on a aquarium and think it is going to kill ick IT WON"T HAPPEN and heres why
UV sterilizers are rated by the amount of uW/cm2 exposure that they produce.
Algae being single celled is very easy to kill at about 22,000 uW/cm2 of UV exposure
Ick on the other hand being a multi celled organism requires about 336,000000 uW/cm2 to be killed

There are 2 key things that need to be considered to make a UV sterilizer effective.
    1. That the bulbs are replaced at the recommend intervals.
    2. That the flow rate through the UV is low enough to dose a lethal amount of radiation to kill.

The amount of uW/cm2 generated varies greatly by brand, wattage and the type of bulb that is used to generate the radiation. Buying a UV without this information is like buying a water pump and not knowing the GPH output.
Any company that does not provide this information on their product should not be considered. One of the better brands is Aqua UV which I will use here and I have on my system.

Let's take Auaq UV's 120 watt UV sterilizer, Aqua UV listed the UV exposure at 90,000uW/cm2 at a flow rate of 1360GPH now at this flow rate I would be killing algae but NOT ICK with a little math you can determine that the flow through the UV need to be less than about 360 GPH. These numbers are also based on the end of bulb life (12 months) 80% efficiency.

You can see that the widely distributed and marketed smaller UV sterilizers are just not powerful enough to be much of any use against ick. That's if you can even find what the UV exposure rates are on them since most don't even seem to publish this info. To get the same result with Coralife's 36 watt turbo twist the flow would need to be less than 12 gallons per hour and there 5 watt less than 2 gph. (this is assuming that the radiation output form the bulb is the same and not even less)

My general research is that you want to run the system volume through the UV about once per hour so a 350 gallon tank should have a UV sterilizer that can produce 360,000 uW/cm2 of radiation at 350 gallons per hour through it to effectively control disease outbreaks.

    ANY ?'s just ask:)

Sorry if I'm not a doormat like the rest of you and just let people walk all over me. I've been fighting my way through life since I was in middle school. I don't appreciate insults, people who beat around the bush, people calling me out, or being disrespectful. I'm glad your door is always open, I'll keep that in mind. So yea, I blew up, but if you would've said that in person, this wouldn't be a big dick contest, we would be throwing blows, or I would anyways.
That's why I always treat people with the same respect that I'm given, until you cross the line. I told you before there isn't one thi I've said on here that I wouldn't say in person. This is how I am, I have thin skin, and razor blades for knuckles. I was brought up fighting, and I'm damn good at it.
Anyways who cares.. Y'all have a good night, a good week, and a good month. I'm sure I'll be banned for this, then all those non members who don't want to join because of the hostility can pay their 20$ and join up!

I would like a mod to delete the argument and this post as there is still good information in this topic with good links all which hold valuable information. Is this possible? People were talking about needing general advice section. Lots of info about uv plus other things and ich is a very common thing

That's an awesome bio, thanks for sharing! It's irrelevant, you've missed the entire point! You seem so stuck on fighting someone you've honestly missed everything. It is what it is, you do whatever you feel you need to do to feel better about yourself.

Thanks everyone for the help. Neither fish ended up making it and I had them for around 3 months. The weird thing is a buddy of mine bought the same 2 tangs with me online and lost his over the weekend. We bought them online from a guy in Florida for 8 and 12 apiece. Im not sure it was just ich. Of course I saw the ich on them and only these 2 fish and it was near impossible to catch these fish without jeopardizing my other fish and many corals. I really think this was out of my control. As I said I feed fish regularly and with garlic and supplement algae too. I do my water changes also. The minute I noticed I treated with extra garlic, did carbon and did the reef safe treatment with no luck. Towards the the end both also had white blotches. Ive been watching my other fish closely and nothing is wrong and they are as healthy as can be. Thanks everyone for the help and as we know what works for one is this hobby doesnt work for the other.

I would seriously consider a quarantine tank for future additions. That way if you run into this problem again you will be able to treat the fish and not have to put your main tank at risk. It could very easily have taken out your whole tank and nobody wants that to happen.

We should save this thread and show it to all the new members, so they can see what their in for.
Or maybe some new vendors thinking about donating to the next fest.

It really makes it so that you want to post when you are having a serious issue with you tank and need help.

jstngates Sorry for the loss man and I am also sorry how far off topic this got. I have removed all post that were not pertaining to the topic and I apologize to anyone that may offend but this really needed to be cleaned up so a person could get to the help they needed. The thread is once again unlocked and the conversation can and should continue as I think things will be able to stay on topic.

I had excellent results using hypo in a hospital tank running the DT fallow for 6 weeks. I don't think I even went the full 6 and that was around xmas of 2010 and have not had any incidents of ich since.  It's not difficult at all if you use a hydrometer and it is much easier on your fish.

Mid week i noticed my Royal Gramma scratching on the sand bed. Friday it was breathing heavy. Sat. morning it and one of my clowns didnt survive. Sunday morning my last clownfish passed as well. It was very sudden. I will now run the DT empty for 6 to 8 weeks before trying again. Thanks everyone for the good information
