I followed someone east on I-80 with a big tank hanging out of the trunk of a smallish red car. That wasn't you, was it? Car probably wasn't that small, but that tank sure made it look that way!

He is going to try and drill this himself! PLEASE anyone with suggestions chime in, I have never done this and I think he should at least practice on a cheap 10 gallon or something first any ideas on bits or anything would help, also any one in eastern iowa (Craig???) can offer advice????

I've drilled about 150 or so tanks and 10 gallons are incredibly difficult to drill since their like 1/8" glass. I've only broke 1 tank from drilling and it was on a 10 gallon tank.
My advise:1. Start with a new or barely used drill bit to prevent chipping (BRS or glass-holes has cheap ones).2. Put tank down flat where the side to be drilled is facing up(duh).3. Put duck tape on the underside of the tank where the whole will be to keep water pooled on top side when drilling.4. Put a towel or something soft down on the bottom so if the glass cutout falls down it doesn't chip the tank.5. Get plumbers putty, roll it out into a long piece and create a "bowl" around the whole location.6. Put water in the "bowl".7. Start drilling on the edge of the drill and at a medium fast and don't apply pressure. Let the drill's weight push down on it. (glass-holes has a good video of this)8. Go slow and cross your fingers. When you feel it start to make it through, don't be tempted to push the drill harder for the last bit, this is when the most chipping happens. Make sure there is always water in the pool and the bit/glass stay cold.
    Good luck!

Thanks!!! The onl issue I can see is this, part. (2. Put tank down flat where the side to be drilled is facing up(duh).) This is a bull nose or bullet tank not rectangle, he can not put it face down, will drilling it from the side and not straight down be an issue? I do no think it would but???? Thanks.

It'll be difficult to keep water in the putty bowl to prevent the drill from overheating if it's on its side

You might have to put the side to be drilled down on a couple of 2x4s and drill it from the inside if there is enough room to get the drill in there.

Yea that would probably be your best idea, otherwise you can take it outside, lay it on an angle and run water over the drill bit to keep it wet. One other idea is to stand it up on end with a pillow or something soft on the rounded end, then put it up against a wall flat to hold it up at the right angle. Then you could prop something else up to keep it standing. You'd have to drill it on a ladder! haha
But I like the idea of drilling it from the inside out best.

lol. yep .i drilled 2 other tanks and my big 538, i was going to put 4x4 down fill the tank with some water and drill it from the top down .That way the little water i put in the tank will always be in there until it goes threw . /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif and thats all she wrote... i hope, lol.
