How much flow do you have?

I have a 60 gal display tank with about 1400-1500gph of flow. I've wondered if that's enough, as I still have dead spots in the tank. I've tried increasing the flow even greater, but that freaked-out my softies. I mostly have LPS and softies, with a couple SPS. So....question is, how much flow do you have in your tank and what do you mainly keep?

Have you done the head loss calculator on Reef Central? That seems like a lot of flow in a 60, and I wonder if you are really getting that much. I run a 58, and am looking at replacing a pump for quiet and reliability. I've done a lot of calculations at Reef Central, and you get quite a different idea of what your pump is actually doing. Are you also running power heads in your tank? That's where I get a lot of my water movement.

I'm running 2 Koralia #2s, which are rated at 600gph. I also have a Mag5 pump, which should have about 250gph with the head loss. Plus I'm running HOT mag filter, which is about 100 to 150 gph. So, derating the pumps should put me in the 1400gph range....so, I've thought that would be enough, but I also know that aquascaping has a lot to do with the resulting effect.

In my 90 i have only a mp40 which is rated at 3k gph at max. I probably run it around 2200 and plan on getting another. On my 55 i had 2 k2 and just didnt feel it was enough.

I'm running 4 x MP40Ws on my 120. They run in lagoon mode at about 1/2 speed maximum. There's the potential for 14,400 max GPH, but I would imagine that I'm running closer to 5000 to 7200 GPH variable speed flow...and I still have dead spots. I keep a mix of everything...softies (primarily zoas and palys), LPS and SPS. I can't remember what the number that Calfo threw out there for turnover in an SPS dominated tank...but I thought it was something like 80x.

I've read that 30 to 40+ is common for SPS tanks and down to 10x for fish-only. 80x sounds high, but I'm not going to argue with Calfo !  I also think its better to have many lower flow pumps than 1 or 2 big pumps...so you don't have a fire-hose effect in the tank. Maybe mixing / moving things in the tank is a good option. However, a 60g tank is not optimal at all for reefing....tall and narrow...not much room to move things.

I have around 70x turnover but would like to have more.

How do you achieve that? and, how do you direct your pumps?

from what i have heard though the K2's aren't really that great of a pump, they seem to not produce what you would expect. I had a couple before with my 120 and my 125 and did not like them that much, the bigger Koralia's i didn't have a problem with but the 2's just didn't do well for me

I agree with snowman, I dont think the K2's are all that.

I run about 80X turnover on a 120 gallon tank with 4 Tunze pumps and an ATB flow star return pump.

the thing about multiple pumps is probably true in many cases but with the vortechs you have a nice wide flow with  variable speeds.  and depending on the mode you get flow from both directions.

Yeah, in my case, one is on each side, about 2/3 of the way up, and two are on the back wall, about 1/3 of the way up...so I get variable speed flow from three directions.

I have 4x1,400 flow on a wavemaker + 3,000 return pump (at 0' so some head loss) would put my 210 in the potential for 40x but given the head loss and wavemaker I would estimate about 20-25x.
