I've got a huge elephant ear leather in my 120 and it's going downhill all or the sudden.  I read up a little and was able to determine that it is a female due to it's size, it's approximately 18" tall and 18" across when fully extended.

Here's what it normally looks like

I read that these can 'shed' but I couldn't find much on it during a quick search so I'm hoping that someone out there knows what is going on

Mine does that about once every 2 or 3 weeks, but it is much smaller, and usually lasts 24 hours or so. There's nothing climbing on it obviously, so I'd say it is indeed shedding. And when it sheds, it leans just like yours, and looks just as sad. Oh...BTW, I'm by no means an expert.

I've seen it contract and lean over, etc before but never to this extent. The top layer does appear to be shedding starting on one corner and before I took the pics today I lifted it up a bit and brushed off the loose film layer, but it's slumped down again. I've generally never seen it closed for more than a day or two, and never have seen this sluffing of the top layer. The little fingers that normally stick out are usually fully retracted when it closes up, bu across the sluffing area they are extended but kind of dead looking.

I guess time will tell. It just seems to be looking like it's dying off.

I've had one close up for a couple weeks and when it got around to it, it opened up again and was fine.

check your nitrates, mine would always do that if the nitrates were getting higher than it liked

I have one of those too, bud. I was told that they can close up and shed for weeks at a time. Mine did that for a week, and has since gone outta control as far as growth concerns go.
Don't know how much that helps, but I'm told it's normal.

Have you already tried increasing flow to help it slough off the mucus? Sometimes this helps speed up the shed.

Mine is doing this right now. I thought it was dead at one point since it was a couple weeks during a previous incident but it came back around. I did not know bout the nitrates however. Will check.

I had this happen to one of my Leathers about 3 months ago. I read and read and read about it online and ask people on here about it. Everyone told me that more then likely its growing/molting. I read that is called a sulking period and this can last up to a month from what I have read. During this time they are growing and come out bigger and better. Wish i would have keep all the links I went through to find the info. From what I have read leathers are the hardest to kill. I have the Neon green tip leather and didn't want to lose it. It went about two weeks and then came back and looked great. I just moved it to my 75gl after selling my 29gal setup and it was not happy until i put it just under the return pump spout. They seem to like lots of water movement I know that for sure. At least the two leathers i have do.

    Here it is sulking:

    Then after it sulked

    Hope this helps.

Well it's been slumped over for a couple days, but right now under the night lights it's standing up straight, mostly. Some of the fingers are poking out but it still looks pretty rough. I'll blow it off in the AM if I get a chance and see how it looks tomorrow night. Thanks for all the input everyone

Its ok. They do that! Its a wierd phenomena. I think its so they can shed encrusting organisms. Does it look kinda waxy? I could never explain why mine would do it and for how long. It can do this for weeks. Surprised it hasn't before given its size...

The darkest brown patch along the edge in the first set of pictures has now started to rot away. it looks like something literally took a bit out of it, about 2" long. Now I don't think that is normal, is it? That's some severe shedding.

well I'm not there yet. I did read that you can cut off the dying part and save it. Also read that giving it a FW dip can help too. It seems to be happening slowly whatever it is, so I'm going to give it time and see what happens. It's not mine either although I've been keeping it for about a year now /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

This morning a little over half of the fingers are extended. Fingers around the initially bad area are starting to poke out. Brown rotting color is going away too. The "bite" is not getting worse. I think it's done!
