Its getting close to winter and so its about that time I have to invest in some new heaters. Ive been having a terrible relationship with Theo heaters, went through 6 or 8 of them, but I use 2 at a time, 2 smaller watt to avoid them getting stuck on and boiling the tank. Which is exactly whats happened to all of them, all got stuck on, but never did harm as they were smaller watt heaters. So my question is what is everybody else using and having luck with? Ive seen a post regard Jager and ViaAqua as good heaters, and I like how the ViaAqua and Azoo heaters have the seperate controller for adjustment of temperature, but have noticed that they are in 100, 200, 300, or 500 watts. I have a 75G and go with 2 150W heaters instead of one 300W to keep from boiling in case of a heater sticking. So would anyone like to chip in with what their running so I can get some opinions as to where I should throw my money? Thanks!!!

they make chillers with heaters in them so you can kill 2 birds with one stone /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif you can look at going that route ...

I use Jager and have been happy with them. If you have a controller, use that to control your temp and should that fail, make sure that your thermostat on your heater is set to a reasonable temp (i.e. 78 or 79 degrees) so that should the outlet on your power strip get stuck on, your heater thermostat will save you. I wouldn't hesitate to use two 200 watt heaters.

Thats 3 for Jager, so Ill probably head that route. You would do 2 200 watt heaters for a 75G AJ? You dont think that'd boil my tank if one were to get stuck on? I dont have a controller so the only thing I have to rely on is the heater itself.

Every tank heats and cools differently depending on lighting, internal or external pumps, sump type (i.e. basement sump will require more heaters), etc.   Unfortunately without a controller, you can't really track when your heater comes on/goes off to determine how oten your heater is running and how well it's handling the load.  In my tank, I have 3 250s for about 240 or so total gallons.  I have two set to do the majority of the heating, then a third that kicks in when the other two aren't maintaining minimum temp.
Being able to more granularly control heater on/off settings, determine how well they are keeping up with tank temp by looking at temp graphs and on/off outlet reports and giving you a built in failsafe are all good reasons to consider adding a controller to your tank.
