Ok so I've been fighting a battle with algae for to long now, I've removed my sand bed, I've cleaned out my sump built a more efficient sump and skimmer, stepped up water changes, raised my ph, shortened my light cycles and feed less. My phos is 0, Nitrates 0, Ammonia 0, and yet algae is still taking over!!![IMG]
So my last stand in this battle is to COOK all my LR and start over!![IMG]
I will most likely be thinning out some of my corals, as I wont have much room for all when I pull every thing I can off the LR.
If anyone has a 30g or 40g breeder tank just sitting around I might need one to house my corals in while my rocks cook. (Please let me know.)[IMG]
I will post more as I figure out whats going to happen.

I had to tear down my tank a couple times for long periods of time.

I would suggest borrowing a 100 gallon rubbermaid and using that as your holding tank. The more volume the better in a time like this. And it gives you more room to spread the corals out than in a breeder. You could form a couple egg crate shelfs in the sump, zoas, etc. down low, and sps up high.

    Good luck with this man!

Maybe this is your penance for making us all look bad with all that fancy plumbing!

My bulbs are all only 6 months old as I just built a new canopy and reflectors this summer. I'm using 2 250w M/H and T-5s so I should be ok there.
JB it just goes to show ya that you can be very meticulous about the things you do, but it doesn't guarantee you will be successful in this hobby!

Some bubble, but mostly a filamentous similar to hair algae. I will try to get some pics up later.
Also I'm using 2 MP40s so I have plenty of current in my 48" 120g.

I have 40 breeder laying around. You can borrow it. Either you can pick it up or I can drop it off.

Did u buy pre used live rock or was it all dry rock? I've had problems with pre used live rock in the past collecting detritus in the rock which slowly leeched out phosphates causing a Forrest of hair algae. But as we all know every case is different

Most was bought at LFS and had to be cured, some was bought on line from F&S. ( also needing cured)

Rick, sorry about your battle with algae. Something else you could try is start with dry rock and then sell your old rock once it is cured. I bought some dry rock (Pukani) from BRS for my new frag tank and it is great. Plus they have a 10% off sale this week as well. It might be worth trying.

Are you running a CA reactor by chance? Perhaps you have excess CO2?

Sorry to hear about your frustration, I am just starting to win the war with algae in my biocube, it has been a long battle but with lots of extra water changes,, shortened lighting cycle, new CUC, extremely light feeding and the addition of bio pellets I just about got it licked.

    Algae sucks...

No CA yet, I ran an air line from out side my house down to my skimmer to help make sure I was getting fresh air to the tank, It helped my PH a ton so I was hoping that it would cut one more link to the algae food chain. But to no avail.

I will win it even if I have to start over!
Thanks for everyones thoughts and comments, It just shows what being a member of a great group of people can do to help one another out.

Sorry to hear about the problems Rick. Maybe this is a wild card, but is it possible that it's the water you're using? I only recently bought my own RO/DI, so before now I was locked into water at the LFS. But, I found that of the 2 LFS stores who offered RO/DI water, only 1 worked for me. One of the store's water is good and I don't have a problem with algae or cyano. But using the "other" store's water I constantly battled algae and cyano.....and yet BOTH stores measured 0 TDS. So, it wasn't the dissolved solids that caused me issues...can't say what it was/is, but I do know that there is a distinct difference between the 2 sources. I also know that the GOOD LFS water has additional carbon filtration on his RO/DI system....he claims that it makes a difference. I can't argue with it because I don't have issues when I use that water. So...point is, if it was me, I would try something different with your water for a month or so before cooking all the rock.

Have you considered building an ATS? You could make one for very little $$ in your sump or out of a 5g bucket and a few CFLs & reflectors and give it a try for a couple months, would save you a tear down and selling all your corals.
