I was wondering if anyone would be interested in this?  What I'm thinking is having all our members coral listed according to common name and latin name and whether or not that member would be interested in ever fragging that coral.  We would then know what corals are available locally, and if that member was willing to frag a particular coral, say in 6 months time, it might save folks from buying that same coral online.  I think it would also promote the club, as it would be available to GIRS members only and facilitate more trading amongst us /site/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif   I know there are some pretty nice coral in some of our local tanks and  I for one, am curious what all is in our local tanks.
If there is interest, I would be willing to compile the list..... what do you think?

Here's an example of what a member's list could look like.  It would also help individuals keep track of what they have..............

    I like it!!

This wouldn't be too hard to throw together, and would be a great resource for club members (provided it was easy to update and kept up to date).

I've been meaning to play around with a DB tool I downloaded, so this would be fun to work on, however I've never worked with it before so I'm not promising a speedy completion time or a polished product...also I'm leaving the country Friday for 10 days, so I wouldn't be able to even schedule some time to work on it until after that...so if anyone else has interest in doing this and could get it done quicker please post!

JB - what format would something like this need to be in to easily interface with the website?

This is a good idea and I agree it should be in database form so it is searchable by user, common name or latin. But to interface with the website it would 1. Need to be added to the GIRS database 2. A interface for the list would have to be written. This could be time consuming. Also, pictures should be added.
An idea: I have already added a photo album to the website feature of the Reef Trakker websites. Everyone would have their own individual site that they could update their list or corals. And then mark them for Frag or sale.
This list could then be pulled into GIRS on one page. This would still require some work on the GIRS website but most of the data entry would be done by members on their own website.
Problems: I may need to charge a monthly fee for these websites because of the costs I will incrue. The website is also meant to interface with an Aquacontroller so that may shoot the feature altogether. But I guess there is no reason the site couldn't just have the aquacontroller feature turned off for those who do not have one. But then I don't know if it is worth say $5 a month to someone to have the website without a controller. The last thing is it will be a few months before I could have that portion ready.
If the database was in access I could convert it to the SQL database on my site.
This is just a thought since I was going to build something like this into the website anyway. JB and I had already talked about pulling information from members web pages and data to centralize into GIRS.

I think this task will be a bit daunting, as there are many many corals in members tanks, so maybe photos of the coral could come down the road? The thought of photographing all the corals in my tank and trying to get decent photos at that, seems overwhelming, especially with a little one running around! I think starting small and basic would be our best bet /site/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

For the pictures part. Could you possibly just have a link section so people could post a link to a photobucket picture? I'm not sure how it all works so I'm just throwing that out there. I love the idea though.

Joel - wouldn't each ReefTrakker user be responsible for hosting their own website anyway? or would it be easier for the GIRS website to "gather" the info if they were all hosted the same place?

Just curious, I'm not really sure how any of it would or could work but could it be done as simple as a downloadable excel spreadsheet? And when updated just uploaded back again?

No, the websites will be hosted together on one database. This will make things much better and more consistent and much easier to get stuff to GIRS. Plus I am a control freak. /site/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/cool.gif

    Just my 2 cents:

I think this is a great idea. However, I also think it would be hard to get people to actually participate in it long term and for that reason I'd be very hesitant to invest the time required to create something like this for our website.

For the record, I don' t think it would be hard to come up with something that worked really cool, in fact I've been brainstorming it a bit today since I first read this thread. However, I do think that it would be somewhat time consuming and I'm just not sure that the ROI is there.

Well, as people move get out of the hobby, something dies, or they get something new, the list will never be 100% accurate, but I think it would still be nice to have something because some of it will be accurate, and I'd rather at least try to get a needed/wanted frag from a club member first, rather than buying one. We could ask members to update their coral list every so often, maybe twice a year or something.

Well, hopefully it will happen sometime. I think it is a great idea. I'd like to know what is available from club members. I actually prefer captive frags compared to wild ones. The captive fags are less trouble 90% of the time and less to worry about.

Even if someone has a coral not available it'd be nice to get a good data base. The data bases out there kinda lack in many areas. It'd also be nice for people to be able to put in the conditions they have the corals under and maybe growth rate.

Anyway, I guess all I'm saying is that I'd be willing to catalog all my corals.
    Thanks

one idea that may be a lot easier to apply but not quite as easy to use is to build a form into each users profile that will allow them to list their stuff. the disadvantage is that users would have to browse from profile to profile to look for stuff, but it would make it to where the maintanence of it wouldn't fall onto one person's shoulders. i also don't know what our software is capable of but if all the profiles could be pulled together into one report and viewed all together it would make this idea more usable.
