The mounting screws are screwed onto the fixture so it would be near impossible unless the screw was hanging on a thread; I can see it falling off in that scenario.

Slovan, how long have you had your fixture? I've had mine since June.

i would recommend hanging as you can tell the legs aren't high enough to spread the light and they burn hot enough to melt the braces (ask me, i have burn holes!).. so you have to watch where you put them.

But that still doesn't solve the issue of the way the lights are mounted to the rail. The only other way would be to drill a hole in the grills and run a zip tie through up to the rail

I just posted a couple photos of my tank with the lights hung 10" off the water surface. I had my bud make me a stainless steelbracket and then used the mounting hardware, i.e. rails that came with the units. I have them set on the auto, lunar cycle, on at 8am, 55 minute sunrise, 8pm start 55 minute sunset down to 1% blue overnight. The maximum intensity in the photos, and during the operating hours, is currently set to 40% white and 50% blue. I plan to ramp this up over then next few weeks. I had the reefanatix leds prior to these and am fairly certain I cooked the entire tank of corals. They all, except one or two, seem to be alive and we will see how they fair over the next few months. I will try to take a picture in a while of the moonlight at 1%. I will say this. Raising them up atleast 10", more if your tank width is 22" or more, will certainly help with the dead areas. The 40 degree lenses do not lend them selves well to the legs they came with. I too share the groups concerns with the mounting screws. I will certainly check mine from time to time to ensure I minimize risk of water damage. I dont think the rails could easily be drilled. I would suggest that AI make the next rails grooved just for that reason. I may have a set built, we'll see. Sorry for the long post, I know there are lots of interested reefers out there. Feel free to ask me questions.

Sorry about the photos as well. I have a cheap Elf and wish my santa clause would bring me something real nice for Christmas. Any suggestions on an all around good camera for around a grand would be appreciated.

I just got mine but I know they will hold up because I have the screw turned into the module to the point where I know it should not come out on its own.  I would advise getting a longer screw for it if you don't have confidence it will hold up.
For reference, here are a couple pictures of how the module slides into the frame via the mounting screws.

Yeah Slovan mine were also that tight... actually had to loosen a few so they would go in the rail. lol keep an eye on them... I still think it is the fan vibration that loosens the screws. mine have been in place since June and last week is when they fell.
I use photobucket to post pictures.  you can't use "quick reply" when posting pictures, you have to use add reply and then choose insert image.
