I have a couple colonies of frog spawn that seemed to have shut down within the last couple weeks. They previously had great polyp extension by now seem just closed up. All the other corals (softies, LPS, and SPS) are doing great. Only the frog spawn seem pissed off. Anyone ever had that happen? Any guesses?

I know i read somewhere people using algae scrubbers sometimes had them clamp up. Not saying thats the case, since i have no idea if you are using one. Just a thought..

My frogspawn and hammer corals have closed up, but I blamed that on my nitrate issue or getting them into too much flow. It's happened a couple times.

It happened to me once, when my frogspawn clamped shut for about a month The frogspawn clamping shut was followed my a massive diatom, or dinoflagellate bloom, I do not know which. Once things stabilized, the frogspawn was as good as new. My tank was abut 6 months old at the time.

I would check phosphate levels, as mine were elevated at the time.

Is something else stinging it? What is nearby? Something with sweeper tentacles?

Light, water movement, other coral and water parameters all play a roll in frogspawn health. I had mine clamp up not to long ago because i moved them and they stayed that way for some time. A month and now are starting to just come out again. They also grow by doing this too I believe.

I've had various frogspawn specimens since 2003. My experience has been:

Too much flow - especially directly at the frogspawn

Tempeature swings to either end, i.e. 85+ or below 70.

Overall they're fairly hardy and don't seem to be bothered by much.

Anything out of the ordinary on your params? Stray voltage? Recent changes to the tank?

Thanks for the ideas about what might be going on. My frog spawn have been rather prolifiic over the past couple years. They have been in a stable position in the tank - no other threatening species, consistent water flow, lighting, etc.....except for the occasional aptasia that subsequently gets nuked. However, the last comment from Eric about temperature made me think - my temps have historically been in the 78 to 80 range. However, many months ago I lowered my temps to a range of 76 to 78. However, recently I have had issues with my heater not keeping up - must be going bad - and I now have temps in the 73 to 75 range. There are other corals in the tank that I thought were more sensitive and are still doing great...didn't think that a hardy coral like frogspawn would be sensitive to temperature, but maybe it does. So...need to get my temp back up ... any suggestions for a good brand of heater?
