I have been trying to battle what I thought was some sort of hair algae for a little while now. All I would see where strands of long green coming out of my sand and to my surprise, they are worms of some sort.  I blow my turkey baster where I see the and suck up a worm with long tenticles.  I will try and get a pic a little later but the closest i could come to what they look like when seen in the water column are Cirritulids.
if you go here, http://www.chucksaddiction.com/hitchworms.html and go to that category, the first picture is very close if not exact.

Sounds like spaghetti worms. If so, harmless.

Sand sifting star, but they eat everything else in the sand bed too. It may be worth it if they are as bad as you say though.
