I recently set up a 24x24x10 frag tank, which is sumpless. I did however cut and glue in pieces in the back like a sump to filter through and give it some filtration. Of course I got the good ol new tank syndrome and got a good hair algae bloom that i've been fighting and finally took care of after doing 5 or 10 gallon water changes every 2 days for almost 3 weeks. Its still pretty cloudy though and though I have the chambers in the back not sure if im getting enough filtration or what. Does anyone else in the club have a frag tank that isnt plumbed to a sump or refugium, and if so what are you doing for filtration. I dont know if I should try throwing on a hang on filter with some carbon or what. It doesnt look too cloudy looking from the top down but if you look through the glass its prettttyyy cloudy still. Any advice appreciated!

troubles w/alge,   i would start by getting at least a 20 gal long sump, get the sump ready 1st, then get an overflow box on tank, that will 1" and1/4" swimming pool hose... buy a nice circulating pump large enough for recomended water flow. so measure how far and how high the tank will be above the sump...after u get basics on, then u can install a carbon reactor(low cost). and a small pump for it.        if you need more help, you can call my cell 309-635-6014. i am retired.

Good advise; too many people forget to factor in the head pressure when sizing their return pumps.  Welcome to GIRS.  :)

I dont think its necessary to really put a sump below, i mean its literally built just like a biocube. I did however get the clarity cleared up with a big water change and cleaning out the egg crate. My corals in there still arent looking too good, not exactly sure why. Its a 24x24x10 and I got a 750gph powerhead in there along with the 200gph its getting from the return pump. Maybe too much flow? I have miscellaneous sps and zoas, eventually gonna have lps in there as well.

If it were me, I would plumb all of your systems together and reduce your maintenance to a single system. Otherwise watching the salinity, calcium, alk, pH, etc. in multiple systems is just too much work.

I agree that would be ideal, but that would involve drilling holes in the floor and plumbing them together from different rooms, which I dont think Im all for. Then I'd need a bigger sump/return pump along with all the plumbing.

yah but dont you have you DT (display tank) in the basement with all that space behind it? You should just put your frag tank back behind your DT and plumb everything together. Besides a frag tank is for growing money! not for displaying corals lol. If you put it right behind your DT you won't needa bigger sump or return pump, just create a manifold to disburse water through various outlets, that's what I've done with my set up and it's very effecient. I'm running a 30 gallon frag tank 48x24x6, a 40br RBTA/mushroom tank, and a 120 gallon DT, and I'm only using a GenX pcx40 (1200gph) pressure rated.

I saw your build Andy and I would LOVE to do something like that and plumb everything together, but I have an unfinished basement that I dont really do much with other than play beer pong on the weekends, and all my tanks are upstairs. The 75G (Display) is in my living room and the frag tank is in the kitchen. Realistically theres no way for me to plumb them together unless I wanted to set a tank up downstairs but again, its unfinished and I dont see myself just hanging out down there. Although in the future, at this point far future, I would like to throw a bigger tank downstairs along with a nice frag tank plumbed together, but there's alot of other things on the "to do list" before then. I really do like your setup though and wouldnt mind seeing it in person either, It looks really well put together!
