It is not surprising that fish will recognize themselves. How many of us have fish watch us the second we enter the room? I have had fish show preference over one person in my house over another. We also know many will learn to evade a net, or a trap because they remember what it represents, being caught. It would make common sense that they would know the difference between looking at themselves and looking at another fish that might pose a danger, after all we know they are capable of learning.
