Just wondering if anyone has ever kept one of these for a pet.

Yeah. They can be fun. Give one a night crawler after he wakes up. He will shake like a mad dog.

    Are they tough to keep?

No. They are real easy. Just make sure to give lots of attention to keep them tame. When picking a
running wheel make sure it is solid plastic as they have very small toes and they can get stuck in almost
everything. Clean cage once a week. Thats about all realy.

I had one and wasnt too fond of it. It was a cute critter but smelled, even with a clean cage. It also wasn't much fun to hold, pretty pokey. I ended up giving it to a friend who has a daughter, thankfully it was a great fit for little hedgie. They are easy to care for but I'm not a fan of things that have an odor, it sounded like a great idea at the time. Just my two cents : )

We had one growing up and he was really awsome. Only troubles we ever had we making sure he stayed warm enough because my dad loves being cold and when he reached maturity he pined really bad for a female. Mom had to force feed him for a month for him to pull out of it. Not sure if this a consistent issue or if ours was special. Otherwise he was great. Nick was right about the wheel. We mad e an easy fix by getting a normal large hampster wheel and then weaving the sort of plastic lining u can get for kitchen cupbards tgrough the bars. It was easy to cut to size and a relatively quick way to clean. Scrub a few times and once it started to stain we just replaced it.

    Our hedgehog's name was Peekaboo

Sorry for all of the typos. I posted that on my phone and the buttons are pretty small

These guys will actually urinate on themselves to keep a scent. THat is probably where you get the bad smell from with a clean cage. It is perfectly fine to give them a bath with a gentle pet-friendly shampoo. They also do love to swim. When I had one years ago we would let her swim around the tub and she just had a blast. If tame, they are great pets!
