    So, I saw this thread:

    http://www.reef2reef.com/forums/aquarium-equipment-product-articles/99309-build-your-own-controller-modaquatics.html#post1100239

I was intrugued and wondering if anyone had ever tried it. Is it worth it? What do you think was the biggest benefit? Versatility? Cost savings? Customizability? I am interested in possibly building a controller, but wanted to make sure it was at least as versatile as a retail controller as well as less expensive in building. So, if you have anything to add, would love to hear some comments. I just want to know if this is worth pursuing in a more serious manner then just skimming through articles on line. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

    Thanks!

A guy I work with is really into the Arduino stuff. He said he can pretty much make anything with those. I guess they have a bunch of pre-made modules that you can just drop in and add to. I might have him make a motion sensor trigger for my Halloween props next year. I want to do something like this:

Built my own as a project for school using an Arduino Mega and a Chauvet SR-8.

Was it worth it? Yes! I got an "A".

Were there any benefits? For me it was for a grade and the fact I learned a ton.

Versatile? Yes, with enough time and desire you can customize it to do just about anything you ever wanted.

Cost Savings? Probably not. Maybe if you use someone else's build and copy it to a "T" you could save yourself a little money. If your like me and think your time is of value building one from scratch is far from cost effective compared to the controller available to us on the market.

Fun project but when you can get an Apex Jr. for $150 it's hard to justify the cost.

I was unable to get internet connectivity figured out on mine possibly due to bad hardware but it does display time, ph, temp, as well as log the high and low value of each, and has 8 programmable outlets.

A great project to let your inner "geek" and "reef nerd" get it's fix.

Cool. Well, I would love to set up a controller for my 135. Just don't know exactly what I want and can afford. Lol. I do like the DIY idea. Just trying to decide if I should spend a lot of time researching it.

    Congrats on the A. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif

I just got a reefkeeper lite and still figuring it out. Have you looked at the reefangel ? Looked little to complex for me, but if think you can build your own may be more your speed.
