just getting thoughts. what do you all think of building a stand and in the bottom part framing in and building walls with ply and lining with glass and using for a sump? it would mean max use of space. sump ref and diy ato. other than you cant see the sides what do you think. i have that on my 20gh now. actually just built a box and lined it with shower skirt/plastic and silicone and it has held water for years, 15g. talk me out of it/talk me into it. just dont see the waste of a glass aquarium for this. i can have the local hardware store cust me glass for cheap. and since it will have the support of 1/2" or so ply i figure what the hay. i could do the shower surround againg but just thought glass would be better for a lergoer system. dimensions are 45lx13dx14h or so.

well the down side to that is not having room for things like reactors and other misc pieces of equipment. I have a 30 long for a sump for my 90, and I honestly wish i had done a 20 long instead because of this.

mthomp has a good point, most people have at least one reactor running carbon,GFO, biopellets, ect. But if you really like the idea, just consider making the stand a little taller and adding a small shelf above the sump section that you could set a reactor on.

havent really started this build yet. just gathering materials and ideas. i may actually build this into a basement wall under my stairs. even if i dont i could build the sump a little shorter to give myself the room for adding equipment. i am working with 45" so i could shorten it to say 35" or even 30" i want to do a normal sump with 3 sections i am debating on building a refugium into one end of the sump also. with a seperate line from the tank with a lower flow than what goes through the sump. i cant say that i will never use reactors or any other type of equipment but as of now i dont want to.

I have a friend that put his tank under the stairs and working on it was a major PITA.  You would think it would be a great use of the space, but the limited room above the tank for lights and the lack of ability to access the tank due to the stairs being right overhead, really made it miserable to work on.

yeah i have been measuring and debating this and am undecided. it would be at the highest part of the stairs and upper floor. it all pretty much measures 8'h. so it really shouldnt be an issue. the only thing is it will be by my furnace well within 5' or so.

I was going to express the same concerns. I went with a large amount of space under my stand and I'm glad I did, it makes cleaning stuff SO much easier. And remember, you will be in there once a week or more dealing with something.
I will try to throw some pictures up later of what I did for mine when I built it.
