A few months back I bought a pair of Red Velvet Fairy Wrasses.  After owing them for about a month one of them jumped out of the tank and I didn't find it until the next day.  Needless to say I was sorta bummed but luckily there was still one left.  Last week I was watching my tank from across the room and watched the other one jump straight out of the tank and onto the carpet below.  Luckily I was there and was able to scoop it up and toss him back in in less than a couple seconds.  That's when I started thinking maybe a top of some sort was in order.
I ended up finding some black 3/8" nylon mesh and stretched across a DIY window screen kit I picked up from the hardware store.  I turned out pretty nice and only cost me around $15.
    Here's a shot of it.

I have a bunch of the black nylon left if anyone needs any.  The black not only looks good but from what I can tell blocks very little light.

That's funny, I just got done building my screen frame about 20 minutes ago! I opted for the BRS clear mesh netting instead though. Yours looks good!

Nice job waves! I'd like to come by and look it over.I've got 1/2" egg crate cut add it blocks way to much light.

    Sure thing man.
It is called light diffuser for a reason.  I'll be willing to bet this nylon blocks less than 10%.  I'll have to bring the PAR meter home tonight and test it.

I used the clear mesh as well when I built mine a couple years ago. I read the black blocks some of the light but never tested it as I never used black. I used wire mesh on my reptile tanks. They are cheap and easy to make. I have watched several fish bounce of the net and back in the tank over the years worth the time to save a fish.

I was thinking about going with the BRS clear netting but all they had was 1/4" or 1/2" mesh.  Being my tank is mostly black I went with the black stuff but 3/8" mesh.
It would be cool to measure the difference in PAR levels between the 1/4" clear and the 3/8" black.  I'm willing to bet the 3/8" blocks less light just because it has bigger holes.

I used deer netting and a screen kit from menards. I think it is the same thing they sell at BRS. Only problem was it came on a roll and I still have most of the roll!

One problem that eventually happens is that salt accumulates on the screen and it starts to look kinda ghetto. It is hard to wash off since you can't really scrape it. In the end in your case it might be a better idea just to replace it every once in a while to keep it looking fresh.
