Cutting the tip of a Maxi Jet

If you cut the tip off a maxi jet will it spread out the flow?  I have never had the problem with too much flow but in a small tank a maxi jet 1200 blows the sand everywhere.

You are going to have to widen the output to broaden the flow. Just cutting the tip, assuming I am understanding what you plan to do correctly, is still going to leave the output about the same size.
They do also offer add-on kits that produce a broader flow, however I think they are also advertised to increase flow in general, which may not be helpful for your specific application..

I have the mod kits for them but that even produces more flow but spread out more. I just may have to get small powerheads.

You could also try to drill a few holes in the impeller housing almost directly behind where the regular output is. This would divert some of the water out these holes and thus give you less flow from the original output. The flow from the original output would still be fairly unidirectional, however there would be less of it. Hope that makes sense.
