So, this question might come out of complete ignorance but I was wondering if it is possible for a yellow-striped maroon clownfish and yellow tang to pair up. I ask because I would like to set up a tank for just a pair of clownfish down the road and have been reading about them. Anyway, while reading, a lot of the things they mentioned about clownfish pairing "seems" to be happening with my clownfish and tang.
    1. They swim around the tank together
    2. They have a "comfort" area where they both go if something spooks them
    3. The clown protects his territory from the damsels in the tank but allows the tang right next to him
    4. Both the clown and tang have pushed sand out of the way to make a bed of sorts for themselves
    5. At night, they both sleep right next to each other in that sand bed
I feel kind of silly asking a question like this but figured I might as well let my ignorance show so I will know better in the future. I just thought the two seem strangely close in the tank and was wondering if such a thing was really possible or am I just perceiving the interaction incorrectly.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

That's really cool. There are lots of other examples of different types of animals bonding. Why not with fish?

Pairing like friends yes. My cat & dog sleep together & are buddies.

What would really be interesting is if you add another clown, and they start pairing up sexually, how they would then treat the tang.

This makes sense, I had not thought about that.

When my Black and White clowns were laying eggs the only fish that could come real close to them is my Yellow Tang also same with my Picasso Clowns laying now. Any other fish would get ran down by the clowns. But I highly doubt they will pair up.

I wonder if the artificially close proximity of an aquarium causes this or if it happens in nature.

Very cool when that happens... And I would agree with you Pete, may be harder to get that big maroon paired with another clown at this point. At least he's got a buddy already!

Yeah, the two will have to be happy with each other now. Lol
